Spirits of Mystery: The Moon Crystal Collector's Edition is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Try it for yourself LIke others I too own all the other games in this series and I enjoyed this one just as much. Yes it was a bit more edgy than others, but I liked the fact that the devs have clearly tried to make it a little different rather sticking with the tried and tested.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MONSTROUS DELIGHT WHICH BREAKS FREE FROM THE CONVEYOR BELT OF ASSEMBLY LINE GAMES OVERVIEW: Happy Birthday, Princess! Our pretty princess returns along with her Nanny to save the kingdom – again! In this bleak episode, the Resurgents have returned searching for the Chosen Ones – those who have a mark embedded upon their hands. Every eighteen years, these creatures return to reap these sacrificial victims during the night of the Blood Moon. The victims disappear never to be seen again! Armed with an amulet given as a birthday gift from Nanny, our princess is off to save a set of sisters, Amy and Nicole, and stop the Resurgents from their dastardly ritual. She must act quickly! Our princess has only one night this time to save her kingdom! This is a very dark game not designed for the faint of heart. The idea of watching people (including children) shackled onto a conveyor belt was a little gruesome – even for me! The graphics are realistic – full of blood and gore. The demonic portrayals within this game are intense. There are some creative elements within this game. You are given choices, which is a nice touch. You are given a potion to deal with demons throughout the game. You can opt to either freeze three of the demons or freeze one demon and destroy the others. You can also hide from these monsters or save people within the game. The story is well-written even if it is gruesome. The pace is excellent with plenty of activities to keep one’s interest. You collect figures for a battle scene and you can replay the puzzles and HOP scenes. HOP SCENES: The scenes are creative. In the demo they include a unique scene in which you use the amulet to help you locate numbers form one to nine. The others are lists of items and silhouette. The last scene in the demo is very interactive in which you locate silhouette items and then replace them back into the scene. PUZZLES: The puzzles are the best part of the game. They range in style and difficulty. The puzzles include quite a few physical ones. There is a sleight-of-hand one in which you must follow a bug with a crown on its back as it darts back and forth between other bugs on the screen. When it has stopped, you must choose it from the others. You will play this puzzle each time you need to defeat the monsters. Other puzzles in the demo include matching puzzles, a connection puzzle, and a switch puzzle. There are also a couple more physical puzzles. In one you use a slingshot to hit a glass owl and in the other you maneuver a bracelet to free yourself. FAVORITE PUZZLE: BEAT THE COMPUTER! There is a logic problem in which you must calculate your moves to beat the computer. Alternate turns choosing between one to three lures until none remain. You must end up with the last lure. I believe the computer has been programmed to allow you to win at some point. LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hard, Custom Hints and Skips: 5 to 200 seconds EXTRAS: Map is given to you at the beginning of the game. Amulet which, when charged, defeats evil. 18 Achievements Collect figurines from battle scenes Replay HOP scenes and Puzzles 10 Wallpapers, 14 Concept Art, 6 Screensavers, Music, Movies HERE ARE THE DETAILS (SPOILERS) FOR THOSE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THE HOP SCENES AND PUZZLES IN SEQUENCE HOP SCENES: (A) Search scene. Using the amulet search a door for numbers 1-9. Find them in sequence to remove them and open the door. (B) List of items. (C) List of items (D) Silhouette. Very interactive. Replace items back into the scene once found. PUZZLES: (1) Easy 2) Moderate difficulty (3) Difficult A. Sleight of hand puzzle. Sock it to the demon! Follow a bug with a symbol on it as it flits between two rows. When it stops locate it among 5 other bugs. Rating: 2 B. Logic problem. Beat the computer! Take from 1 to 3 fishing lures so that you end up with the last lure to be taken. Rating: 3 C. Physical puzzle. Slingshot. Use a slingshot with two sliding bars and hit a glass owl when the two bars are in the “green” zone. 2X. The bars speed up the second time. D. Connection puzzle. Connect dots without retracing lines. 3X Rating: 2 E. Matching. Dress me up, Barbie! Create fashionable outfits (for the middle ages) based on a fashion creation within a mirror. Rating: 1 F. Physical puzzle. Maneuver a bracelet and a lever to free yourself. Rating 2. G. Matching puzzle. Choose between 5 runes to create a larger symbol. Rating: 2 H. Switch puzzle. Switch gems on a wheel so that three (3) light rays move through matching crystals to the center of the circle. Rating: 2 I. Same as A to defeat the demon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from At the end I enjoyed I'm a fan of Spirits of Mystery, and I have all of them. At first I was disappointed and confused for the beginning scene, but I was very happy to see that the rest of the game is more soft: there are only 3 violence cutscenes and 1 location (Hall of Sacrifice). For this reason I rated -1 star. I love graphics and location, but also music, puzzle and bonus are ok. The story is engaging and forgets the lack of Isa, Mortis and the "Five Kingdoms", however I would like to see them again. I would also like to see more collectibles or morphing object. Sorry for my english.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from THIS WOULD BE A FANTASTIC NEW SERIES GAME BUT IT JUST DOESN'T WORK AS A PRINCESS GAME I'm going to continue giving Amax kudos for the fantastic job they are doing. These guys are clearly putting on their thinking caps, to introduce fresh new ideas in a stale environment. Think about it, when is the last time you saw a different or unusual feature in a HOPA game? Amax has got mojo, and my prediction is these devs are going for the gold, I can't wait to see what's to come, I'm betting they have many more tricks up their sleeves, and perhaps a new series or two in store for us. They still need to correct the widescreen issue however, none of the Amax/ERS games automatically support widescreen, I have to either play their games in windowed mode, or adjust my screens resolution, otherwise, the game stretches out too far and cuts off everything on the sides, hopefully, they hear my pleas and fix this annoying issue. Why only four stars when I just sang praises of how Amax has raised the bar on HOPA games? Well, it's because in my opinion, they should have started an entirely new series with this game, it's anything but a Spirits of Mystery storyline! SOM games are supposed to be about the 5 kingdoms, and the 5 princesses who rule. It's about the evil sorcerer Isa, and the sorceress who pulls his strings, its supposed to be about Nanny the immortal mentor of princesses. Other than a brief appearance from Nanny at the start, everybody else is a no show, the black panther doesn't even make an appearance. The Moon Crystal should have ditched the princess, gave the heroine a rebellious tough girl attitude, and developed a brand new series, a series where the heroine's personality becomes more brazen and rebellious with each new adventure. (if I could only write these storylines...wouldn't it be cool if BF allowed each reviewer to submit a storyline plot, and comprised a game that featured our ideas?)(think about it, there are only a handful of top developers, and even fewer team members who write the storylines, and there are thousands of reviewers, with even more amazing ideas swirling around!) Another reason I'm only giving this game 4 stars is because of the Collector's Edition extras, or lack thereof. Other than a dozen and a half Achievements to earn, there are only statues to collect. They completely ditched the collectible portraits that gave you insight into each character, and I actually liked the royal crown collection that was introduced in The Fifth Kingdom, so I'm not sure why they decided to abandon these features, again, if they are doing away with all key ingredients of its predecessors, they should have opted for an entirely new series. At the start of the game, Nanny gives you an Amulet that will protect you from harm, but for some reason, you need to whip up a freezing potion to either temporarily freeze several minions or destroy fewer. Throughout the game you'll be given several "choices" such as how you will use the limited amount of potions you have, but I'm not really sure how your decisions will effect the outcome, really the only way to find out, is to play the game twice, using different choices. The Hidden Object Scenes are varied with Interactive List finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, and Interactive Progressive Silhouetted Shape finds where you must find an item that matches the silhouetted shape and then use that item interactively in the scene to expose the next item and so forth. Many of the HOP's are repeated in the same scene, another annoying feature I hope Amax decides to ditch, it's plain ole boring a second time around. The Mini Games are fairly good, and there seems to be a ton of them, which is totally awesome. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Follow the beetle as it shuffles between other beatles. 2) Use your amulet to find and select runes on the door in numerical order. 3) Select no more than 3 lures to take, the player who takes the last lure wins. 4) Select the triangles when they are all in the green zone. 5) Connect all the dots in a continuous line only once. 6) Create the outfits shown in the mirror on the mannequin using arrows to move through the options. 7) Use your bracelet and a lever on the conveyor belt to free yourself. 8) Create the symbols shown using rune markings. 9) Rotate and swap disks to conduct the three rays of light from the colored crystals to the center, light rays can only pass through crystals of the same color. Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Dark Side I own all the other Spirits of Mystery games, and I must say I wasn't expecting the next one to be like this. If blood, gore, and cruelty bothers you then this game is not for you. I don't like that aspect myself. But there are other aspects I do like about it. I won't go in to all the info since others have pretty well covered that. I liked the mini games and the HO's were different. All in all, I liked it enough to want to finish it so I bought it. I just hope this 'dark side' is not how the forthcoming Spirits of Mystery games are going to be. I doubt I'd buy them if that happens again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Being special can be dangerous... It is the night of the blood moon. A night, in which people with a special mark on their hands are taken away by terrible creatures. They disappear and are never seen again. But today is also the birthday of our princess and her faithful nanny gives her an amulet as present, which has been in her family for long. As part of an ancient relic it can resist dark magic. … and it will be needed! The temple doors crash open, a creature attacks the priest, who later tells more about the blood moon and the connected curse of disappearing people. Further we learn, ages ago there were 3 mages, threatening the realm, who were defeated by a warrior, who sacrificed himself to seal them behind a door and so ban the evil. Upon entering the temple, a creature had captured a young woman and they disappeared behind this door, sealed with red glowing crystals. After charging the amulet on the altar, the amulet can melt the red crystals – with a special key, the door will open. As in all games of the series we have a merchant, where useful things can be dealt, so here we get the missing figurine for the door and thereby enter the main plot: rescuing the young woman and all other captured souls. Nicole is held in a cage, a creature is watching her. But she can tell us, these creatures are resurgents, who take people with marks on their body. She had a potion, able to destroy them, but lost it in the temple. So you go back and fetch it. The potion either freezes or destroys resurgents. But before freeing Nicole, you need to help Amy, who is held inside a house. After destroying the resurgent holding her capture, she sees a mark on your arm. Apparantly there are different marks, yours is that of a warrior. You have to make a decision: will you take only the girls and hide or rescue all captives? Of course you will answer correctly and so you and Amy change places, so that your way will lead you into the realm of the resurgents. The prisoners are transported with a conveyor belt. You can free yourself and reach the laboratory, where you stop the conveyor – after finding useful items and mastering several puzzles. In the last scene you meet the warrior, who held back the mages: he is overpowered by a dark mage, a huge otherworldly figure growing with fire out of the darkness. It is a dark game as most of the later spirits of mystery games are. You may decide, whether you’ll free the prisoners or not. I haven’t tried the no variant. Don’t think there is an alternative. Puzzles are mostly easy but entertaining, HOS varied and suiting in the scenes of the game. Artwork is as usual – stunning. The story is the usual one as well: princess will save people in distress. Opponent this time seem to be dark mages. So far neither Isa nor Mortis have appeared.
