New York Mysteries: The Lantern of Souls 4.6 5 22 22
It's Hard To Feel Sorry For This Golddigger! The White Stone Order has another case for Laura James to solve, and Dr. Bishop is convinced that it's paranormal. Laura is one tough woman, especially when you consider this New York Mystery takes place in the 50's, a Journalist/Detective that doesn't let anything stand in her way, even the undead! When Laura starts her investigation of the brutal murder of Carrie Martel, a widow who buried her famous lawyer husband just hours ago, things just don't add up. Has Thomas returned to seek revenge, or is there a much more plausible theory? I purchased the Collector's Edition because, New York Mysteries is known for its collections and The Lantern of Souls is no exception. There are 9 hidden Apples, 9 hidden Shields, 9 Music Symbols, and 9 hidden Miners. There are also 20 Achievements to earn and 35 Morphing Objects to find throughout the adventure, and a new feature of 16 collectible Fact Cards that give you fun facts about points of interest in New York. The Hidden Object Scenes are scarce, with only 5 in the entire game, BUT, I promise you they will not disappoint you. These are extremely Interactive Progressive Silhouetted Shape Finds, with all kinds of gadgets to figure out and several smaller puzzles to solve within each HOP. The Mini Games are really creative, however, several of them are just too simple to solve, my only complaint of this entire game. Below are brief descriptions of some of the Mini games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Rotate the arrow to set the correct sequence. 2) Select two symbols to create the symbols shown in the center. 3) Find pairs of taps that rotate at the same rate of speed. 4) Use a code to unlock a door. 5) Use the control buttons to help the mouse move a square to the designated spot. 6) Connect wires from left to right by following tangled leads. The Collector's Edition has 9 Wallpapers, 16 Concept Art pictures, 26 Videos, 6 Music Soundtracks, 18 replayable Mini Games, 5 replayable Puzzles, 20 Achievements, 35 Hidden Collectibles, 16 collectible Fact Cards, 35 Morphing Objects, 20 Bonus Games, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! A GREAT GAME FOR THOSE WHO LOVE EERIE MYSTERIES Laura James, a journalist with the Daily News and a member of a very secret organization, is back in Lantern of Souls an incredible new game in the New York Mysteries series. The game begins with a funeral and is followed by a very strange murder. Professor Bishop, the head of the Order, has asked for Laura?s help with investigating the scene but he leaves her with a warning to return to headquarters the minute she sees anything out of the ordinary. Well, it isn?t too long before Laura is back at headquarters and picks up a partner who returns with her to see if they can figure out what is going on at the Martell estate. I don?t want to tell you too much about the story but will only say that this is without a doubt one of the best games I have played this year. This is certainly not the standard HOPA game and it just keeps getting more interesting at every turn. The game offers only three preset modes of gameplay with no custom mode ? Easy, Normal, and Hard. The graphics are quite good but the characters do seem a bit flat and could be better and maybe a bit sharper. On the other hand, the voiceovers are excellent. This game is set in the late 1950s and poor Laura needs a new stylist and a bit of an update. The voiceovers are excellent and the sound effects are sometimes downright unnerving and creepy. Your tools include an interactive transporter type map that shows areas with available tasks. At least through the demo I haven?t found any other special tools or gimmicks and doubt that I will as the game progresses. The New York Mysteries games are basic mystery solving games where your most important tool is your brain power, which is one of the reasons I love this series. There are far more mini-games than there are HOPS but the HOPS that we do come across are extremely interactive and terrific. In some cases the HOPS require a lot of patience because it is not always obvious what item you need to locate from the silhouettes shown that will start the ball rolling. On the other hand, even though there are more mini-games they seem very easy. Some examples of the mini-games in the demo are as follows: rotate a dial according to present numbers to select the correct code to open the globe ? easy; use symbols located on the spokes in a circle to create the symbol in the center ? easy; rotate pairs of levers to match the angles ? easy, create a rust remover following a diagram ? easy, move a mouse through a maze to open a door ? a bit tricky; and match segments of a lock ? easy but fun. I am sure that there will be many more mini-games following the demo and I am sure that they will increase in difficulty as the game progresses. Earlier I said that this is an awesome game and IT IS! The storyline grabbed me and given all of the things to do with the HOPS and mini-games I found the gameplay factor to be excellent. The other games in the New York Mysteries series are excellent and Lantern of Souls continued with that pattern of excellence and might even be better than the others. The New York Mysteries series has always been a top-notch series with terrific story lines that create wonderful games but even though I think this is a great game, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will like. no words i don't know where to start this is such a phenomenal game. long and very interesting story. you will need to use the jump map after awhile. i have to say i just love love love this game. one scene made me jump but there is no gore in this game i'm speechless. this is based on full game. no glitches which made this so enjoyable. morphing not real hard to find also the collectibles were ok to see. love the collection cards, i learned something about new york i never knew. as always try the demo but i don't think you will be disappointed in this one. Mothers finest: outstanding graphics and animation. It is challenging and exciting. My rating is based on playing the entire SE. It meets most of my requirements. Usually I don?t rate a game with 5 stars, if I can?t play in minimum 4-5 hours, but this one has such an unbelievable fine quality, it is worth 5 for sure. The story as well is quite exciting. - Story: You?re a journalist and member of a secret order. Investigating mysterious crimes. This time, you have discovered someone who not only stole the soul lantern from the Reaper, but also has turned the dead into zombies. You have to stop him. The end was quite satisfying. - Difficulty can be customized slightly. Tutorial, sparkles, map issues, glitter and hint / skip recharge. - Graphics: awesome, lucid, fantastic. - Animation: incredible good. - Music: fitting - Voice-overs: excellent, fitting to characters and well synchronized. - Tools: you have an interactive map. - HO?s: Wonderful full fletch interactive types with silhouettes. Very interesting. You can?t switch to another mode, but why would you do that? - Mini games: not the catchiest, but nice to play. - Adventure part: Very challenging, you do have a lot of items and it is not very obvious, what to do. They are spread about all locations. You have to roam them several times, a lot forth and back. In the middle of the game I began to be impatient and used the map sometimes. Minor Dislikes: - Length: I needed about 3 1/2 hours for completing. Too short, especially because it was so good, I could have played many hours more. - The whereabouts of needed items were sometimes far-fetched. E.g. why is an eagle figure- belonging to the HQ- in a safe from the victim? - You can?t exclude helping texts. May 2, 2016
A Fun Mystery Game I loved this game. It is story driven and not just a usual hidden object game. There are hidden object scenes but they are silhouettes and instead of just searching for an item you must use the silhouetted item to find other items in the scene. I so prefer that to just random items to find in a scene. The story is good and the length of the game was also good. The puzzles were easy but it didn't detract from the fun of the game. BEST GAME NO EXAGGERATION--SPELLBINDING CAST! If FIVE-BN GAMES doesn't win one or two top 2016 game categories for this, will be very disappointed. This is great gaming. For starters, with 26 smooth, detailed videos, gamers can't go wrong. Developers took their time, however, get the CE so you can replay them as I did many times over. The best is Video 17 in the lineup--will give you a gasp as it did our beautiful, unassuming Laura James. All are great with 17 as my favorite and then 19, 20 and 21. Music - 6 awesome tracks with the usual spellbinding New York Mysteries musical score--violins, cellos and horns, oh my! Mini-puzzles - 18 with 5 added puzzles n the CE CE Bonus Game of 20 added mini-puzzles as well. Complete Collections or go back to retrieve any missed. Gamers can re-visit any scene again and again as no scenes are blocked. How's that for being thorough and generous? The journal is very interesting and helps gamers understand the story line. Did I say story line? Indeed! Professor Bishop, Laura James, Will and a cast of others will thrill gamers with their personality and good looks. Even the villain is ruggedly handsome as a "lunatic". Thank you FIVE-BN GAMES for a fabulous, over-the-top ten star gaming experience. Enjoy! -Mama Mia- October 23, 2016
Lots To Do Good length, lots of content, many scenes, decent puzzles, understandable plot and a map to help you out. That's a lot for a game that isn't a CE. There's a bit of back and forth, but they gave us a map so there's no need to complain. June 16, 2016
New York, New York! This was an excellent game. It was very clever and had lots of fun mechanics. However it wasn't so difficult that the average mechanic wanna-be couldn't accomplish anything. It was totally fun from a to z. June 2, 2016
Definitely a hit with me I was hoping for another New York Mystery and was not disappointed with this game. Another sinister villain wanting to rule the world which leads us into a battle again solving all obstacles to defeat evil once again, I played the CE version and so pleased that I purchased it. The graphics were brilliant with a great storyline. Music has become a theme for New York Mysteries since the very first in the series. I had very little need for the hint in the puzzles but definitely needed the map to get to some of the levels. I especially liked the puzzle with the four tokens which had to be moved. May 9, 2016
It's up to you, New York, New York. Another murder mystery in New York for Laura James to solve! She returns in this New York series to entertain in a delicious "who done it" that retains the style and color of the previous games in the series but steps up the intrigue and game play. This game is attractive on many levels. Don't miss this one! May 1, 2016
