Haunted Legends: The Secret of Life Collector's Edition 3.9 5 44 44
THAT CREEPY HAUNTED LEGENDS HOUSE CONTAINS THE SECRET OF LIFE BUT NOBODY'S EVER SURVIVED! Saint Germain searched the world for a cure, but nobody could cure him. Depressed, he wandered through the desert where he met a man dying of thirst. St. Germain gave the man his water, in return the grateful man told him of a house that could cure him, the house that contains The Secret of Life, the house that has made Haunted Legends famous, THE haunted house where nobody comes back from, the Haunted House made of Legends! RUN FOR IT! You of course aren't the only one interested in this house, when you arrive, there are three other healers that have been hired to perform a Purification Ritual, and everyone thinks you are one of those healers. To find the Secret of Life, you will have to spend three nights in this legendary haunted house, and survive! Throughout the game you will Collect Symbols, once they are all found you will be able to use them during the purification process. There are plenty of Achievements available as well as Morphing Objects (my favorite feature of all time) and Collectible pieces of Cake. The Hidden Object Scenes are varied, there are scenes where you find items that match the keywords in each paragraph, as well as listed item finds, There aren't many HOP, but there are a ton of Mini Games to make up for it. Below are brief descriptions of some of the Mini Games you will encounter: 1) Pull all levers down, some effect others. 2) Match identical patterns on butterflies. 3) Swap gems to match color combo sample. 4) Complete the image by rotating parts correctly. 5) Complete the image by sliding chips to the correct slots. This Collector's Edition has 10 replayable Mini Games, Endless HO's, 20 replayable HO's and Bonus HO's, 17 Movies, Morphing Objects, Collectibles, Wallpapers, Concept Art, Photos, Random Facts, Haunted Legends Facts, 6 Screensavers, Match Cats, Music, St. Germains Weekly Planner, Grandma's Recipes, Achievements, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! ERS Tries Something New, and Succeeds Based on Main and Bonus Games, Actual Rating 4.6 Poor lil' ERS, left in the dust by other devs wowing us with morphs, collectibles, offbeat achievements.....but not any more! I was worn out trying to keep up with eating cake, finding cats, smashing bell jars, spotting morphs--and those are just the achievements. We haven't even gotten to gameplay yet. Okay ask someone else about the story, but fair warning, it involves a lot of gathering stuff for potions and spells. I'm lukewarm on that, but some like it. It's repeated three times and I'm totally bored by that time, and wanting to find secret passageways to do other things. Good thing ERS obliges, so I go skipping into dungeons, etc. Puzzles outnumber HOs, but only just. Most you've seen before, all are attractive. There's fair variety in HOs as well. Achievements are quirky and fun, so read them before you play. Collectibles are morphing objects of magical significance, cats hidden in HOs, bell jars in plain view, and eat all the cake you find. Find all the cats and play a matching cat card game. The endless HO is just a very large HO scene with 60-70 items. If you miss a cat, replay the HOs in extras and find them. I got all the morphs, so I don't know if you can go back to get them. I'm counting off for lower challenge and repetitive storyline, but I think ERS did well to compete in a very creative, original way regarding collectibles, morphs, and achievements. They also included a quiz on Haunted Legends games, and the backstory on this game. As usual, the main game is 3 hours or less, and bonus game an hour. The latter carries the main story out further. Is it worth a CE? I believe it is. This game is so rich with extra goodies, that I think the SE would be cheating yourself out of a good time. November 6, 2015
Haunted Legends reveals SG quest, solidifies house enigma Saint Germain, the miserable pint of mischief we have learned to distrust, returns with a human face and story to flesh out the Haunted Legends saga. You begin gameplay as SG frantically searching for a cure for your mystery illness when you encounter the town elder, who adds to your burden. His daughter Meril has been murdered and her soul cursed, so you must help in a purification ritual before the whole town succumbs. I love the back story of Saint Germain as a mortal. One of the unique aspects of this game is your ability to make choices that will impact the outcome, such as whether to help someone by sacrificing your time or safety. The game creates an interactive atmosphere that doesn't feel like a linear, pick this item up and then complete another action. Innovative tasks include placing torn paper pieces together to advance your own map. I love the HOG with Meril's beloved dog Chappie. He appears to be a cranky but adorable papillon. If you disturb him while searching for objects, you will be forced to locate another bone before resuming the scene. How original! I've never seen that in any other game. Developers were diligent when mixing HOGs up. There were also lists with objects in all caps, and books that had to be arranged before you could find the items hidden in the pages. I am a fan of the traditional lists with a couple of items that require extra steps, and there are a few of these types of scenes as well. Other characters you will encounter include Meril's father, the town elder, the town pharmacist, and Meril's friends. I really enjoyed traveling around the mansion grounds and spooky streets with its gothic scenes. Your encounter with Meril is unnerving. The Haunted Legends house on the hill is enveloped in complete darkness. Candles must be lit several times to see the wraith-like woman flying toward you in the dark. As others have said, this would have been perfect as a Halloween release. Skulls, bats, moonlit cobblestone streets and a possessed woman with swirling brown hair and eyes disguised behind a milky white cloud add to the malevolent atmosphere. Witch themed morphing objects are hidden throughout the game and are added to your collectibles. You can see them indicated on your map, and some are tricky to locate. Cats are hidden throughout the HOGs. Some of these require close inspection, but there is a paw indicator that pops up in the screen's right-hand corner if you are not sure you have found all the cats. If you collect them all, a fun cat match game is in the extras menu. The cat cards move to different rows if you fail to make a match. The bonus game is a match 3 shooting skulls game. Mini games are challenging, but not to the point of having to constantly consult the strategy guide. The most challenging game was at the library entrance with an owl surrounded by rings. You must be very precise to complete this puzzle where balls on different rings must be placed just so before they will all spring into place and open the library door. Various pastries are hidden throughout scenes to whet your appetite. Seven visual recipes are revealed if you find and eat each dessert. The chapters are broken up into three nights to stay up with Meril and extinguish her demons. Part of the mystery is completing this task and uncovering the culprit. Choices you make throughout the game will reveal more of the original Haunted Legends story and character motivations. The bonus chapter was extraordinarily well done and very lengthy. We learn so much more about SG, and even get a peek at his weekly planner in the extras menu! He is a complex character, and not all good or evil, as it turn out in this game. The ending is concise and well written as it echoes the beginning of the Haunted Legends series with a nod to the queen of spades, who is able to grant wishes. The collector's edition offers several goodies that include 10 replayable mini games, 20 HOGs, wallpapers, movies, Haunted Legends facts, soundtrack, a test your Haunted Legends knowledge quiz and six screensavers. And for more HOGs, there is an endless option. Several items float together in a starry sky until you find them all. This is also replayable and timed so you can compete against yourself to achieve a better time. The power is really with the players on this one. Two endings with two different choices have to be made at the bonus game ending. How you decide affects SG. I certainly can't wait to see the next chapter in his story unfold. November 7, 2015
IMMORTALITY IS GERMANE TO THIS GAME BASED ON THE FIRST 3 CHAPTERS OF 4 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER Playing legendary Saint-Germain, (before becoming immortal), you have one week to find the Secret of Life (hidden within an evil house) or you will succumb to the ravages of an unknown illness. Adding to your dilemma, you must also save the soul of a young girl as well. This is a decent game. The MOST INNOVATIVE part of the game are the choices you make to alter the game. The graphics are excellent providing a dark and spooky atmosphere for the game. There is an equal number of HOP scenes and puzzles. The HOP scenes are puzzle-like and include sentences with items in BOLD letters, silhouette, and lists of items to locate. I thought the HOP scene with the dog was especially creative. There are also some mini-HOP scenes which require you to locate a few of the same item within a scene. They are well-crafted. The puzzles range in variety and difficulty. Most are easy; however, there are a few which are moderately difficult. The puzzles I played include matching puzzles, a moving tiles puzzle, a sliding tiles puzzle, and a sliding rings puzzle. You also receive a portion of the map in the game which is a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces must be rotated by clicking on them twice. You will prepare quite a few potions for three rituals in this game as well. There are many collectibles in this game including symbols of eternity, cats, morphing objects, cakes, special symbols, and you will receive some of grandma?s cake recipes as well. This is decent game; however, it is missing some of the creative elements from other ERS games. You do not have the option to play another game in lieu of the HOP scenes. Also, ERS does not give us the option of Casual and Difficult levels for the puzzles as in previous games. However, the addition of the slightly difficult puzzles make it decent game; however, this is not one of their best games. With little time remaining in your life, you are faced with multiple tasks at this house. You must perform a purification ritual to not only cure your illness, but to also free the soul of a young girl with a troubled past, slated to become a witch. Hopefully you will cleanse the house of its evil influence and perhaps attain immortality. Yes!! Great game, the story is awesome and I loved the ending just before the bonus. Actually I had a good laugh. Music was enjoyable as was the visual and voice overs. Hello ERS, please, let us be able to use screen shots in your games. You truly have some divine art work done and some of it would make a great screen savers!! Thanks I truly enjoyed your game... Just all kinds of ............... WOW! Based on the Beta and CE Demo. Wow. Followed by several moments of silence. Then ........... another ... w - o - w. St. Germaine has been very ill. He now only has 1 week to live so he has been searching in vain (so far) for the Secret of Life which is supposed to be in ...... the ............. h-o-u-s-e. The game has some very new nuances to it. For instance, you will be asked a question .... or perhaps YOU will have to ask a question ...... and you have 2 choices. How will the choice YOU make affect the outcome of the game? Or will it? Hmmmm. Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom difficulties. HOGS (hidden object games) were mostly list items - not very interactive. One was a silhouette. None difficult. Mini games were fun. Some time consuming but all very fun. CE Bling: I expect the usual fare from ERS including: * Achievements - in the form of questions (i.e., Do you like to read? How much do you like to read?) - hmm. * Morphing Objects - YAY! This girl loves me some morphing objects! * Collections - Of what? I clicked on a few items inadvertently and ..... whoosh ..... off it goes ..... and I've apparently done something right. But what? Go figure. * Again...inadvertently clicked on ..... something .... and "1 of 25". But 1 of 25 WHAT????? Besides my personal "wow" factor (which generally dictates whether I will purchase a game) .... DURING the game play I turned the volume on my television ............. off. I wanted NO distractions. Even white noise in the background. I was THAT involved in the game. THAT'S never happened before. Hmmmm. A definite CE purchase for me. Great for all levels of expertise mainly for the story. Difficulty is fairly intermediate. I felt taken back to some of the features of older games. No gimmicks or gadgets or helpers (don't get me wrong ... I LOVE helpers) or interactive HOGs and multi-level mini games. Just a great story with great game play. This game would have been perfect for a Halloween release. Ghosts and bats and dead people come to life and .... a very creepy, spooky house. ENJOY! Overall Impression: Definitely CE-worthy. Lots of spookiness for a Halloween release. I gasped at the end of the demo and just sat in silence for a few minutes going "wow" - over and over. A definite purchase for me. Worth 10 gazillion stars. November 5, 2015
Learn the secret of life! This is the 7th game in the Haunted Legends series and it's great. Learn the story of Saint Germain and how he became the way that he is. Great story-line, easy hops and puzzles I hope this is not the final chapter in this series. November 7, 2015
LEARN MORE ABOUT COUNT SAINT GERMAINE AS HE SEEKS THE SECRET OF LIFE In this new Haunted Legends we play the game as Count Saint Germaine who is suffering from a terminal illness. We have traveled the world in search of a cure but as we are at the point of losing hope, we learn of an ancient house that is said to possess the Secret of Life. Your search is almost at and end and you are one of four healers summoned to the house to perform a purification ritual and, if you are successful, you will then receive the Secret of Life. As you prepare for the ritual you certainly find there is more to the story than simply gaining the Secret of Life. It seems that the elder has not been very open with you and he requires a healer that will complete the purification ritual to save his daughter?s soul and banish the curse that will soon engulf the entire town. It becomes apparent that this will not be an easy task as other healers have perished during the process. The game offers 4 choices of gameplay mode: Casual, Advanced, Hard, and Custom. In the Custom mode the hints and puzzle skips can be set in a range of 5 to 200 seconds. You can fiddle with the settings and uncheck tutorial and wrong click penalty buttons if you wish. As usual the graphics are excellent and have that signature Bunny Team look. Their hand drawn artwork is tip notch and I think their characters are exceptionally well depicted. The lip synced voiceovers are also excellent as are the ambient sound effects and music. Your tools include an interactive map that is acquired in the game?s first HOP scene. An additional map will also be received when you are about to enter the gates to the cemetery and the house. The bunny team seems to have received the message that we don?t particularly care for pet helpers and other gimmicky objects and have stayed away from those in this game. You are on your own to play this game and find the Secret of Life. The HOP scenes do have some variety as usual. The first scene was one where not only do we find the items but we will collect additional pieces to open a case. The next HOP was the standard list type but it too had some interaction required. The puzzles seemed a bit more challenging and I have to admit that I struggled with the skull lock puzzle and just couldn?t seem to get it. With a puzzle being so tricky early in the game, I am hopeful there will be more challenge ahead. Although the puzzles might be challenging the only thing I don?t like is that some of them are the type that I dislike where we move one thing and others will move as well. I couldn?t see the logical pattern and happened to solve one just as I was ready to hit the skip button. I prefer puzzles that have some obvious logic involved and don?t seem quite so random, so I am hopeful that puzzles later in the game are not all this same type. The CE version of the game has collectibles and morphing objects. I actually found some collection pieces by not even realizing that I had clicked on them. The remaining extras are playing mini-games and HOPs, Facts about the Haunted Legend series, Test (a quiz to see how much you know about the series), Cat-Match, Recipes, Art, Music, and the bonus gameplay as well as the Strategy Guide. IMHO, because of the difficult puzzles the Strategy Guide will certainly come in handy. It looks like the Bunny Team has included more extras in this game than they have in others so it is a great value to get the CE. The game certainly has the creepy factor that many gamers just love. The storyline is intriguing and maybe we will see how SG became the nasty little man that he has been in all of the other Haunted Legends. Of course this is just conjecture on my part since my review is based only on the demo of the game. Since I have enjoyed most of the Haunted Legends games, The Secret of Life was an instant buy for me but as always, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. November 5, 2015
