Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entertaining - historical and spooky Lovely artwork, lots of time travelling ghostly locales from Elizabethan England and Italy to the Mississippi and Twain family home. Very well written. Obviously this is a ghost tale with time travel. Players will enjoy meeting the characters in Twain's books, Shakespeare's and Marlowe's plays and other colorful characters that actually were a part of Twain's life as well as aspects of his real life as a father etc. He really did have a brother whom he dreamed would die in a boat explosion and it happened. This haunted Twain. He did go bankrupt as a result of investing on new technology and experimental gadgets and outlived his most of his family, daughters and wife. He spent his later years travelling the international speaker circuit and was a world famous super star of his time. But he was lonesome and plagued by 'ghosts' a bit like this game. The game was very enjoyable. NOTE: This game is challenging because you must earn hints. Also because there is no walkthrough or active forum. READ THE JOURNAL often. It will hint at what you need to do. Might want to play with brightness turned up. Some items you need are easy to miss in the tunnels etc. Enjoy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Excellent Game ... Great Graphics, Sounds, Effects, Animations, Story, Voice & Video Bits ... An All Round Stunning Game, As Are All The Games In This Series ... This Is The Second Time Around That I've Played This Game As It Was One Of My Earliest Purchases ... My Only Regret Is Not Buying The Collectors Edition ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Twain & Tesla - Who'd of Thought? I love this game! All of the Midnight Mystery games are excellent (except the Edgar Allan Poe mystery). Everything about this game is well done. The graphics are amazing. I couldn't believe how lifelike they were. There are no voice overs, but I liked that. I wouldn't want anyone pretending to sound like Mark Twain. The story line has several twists & turns to it, so it keeps you guessing. In the end. it's all tied together. I also enjoyed the collectables in the game. Each scene has a clover to collect. If you collect enough of them, it will open a bonus scene to play after you've completed the game. It's obvious that this game could have been much longer, but for whatever reason, the developers chose to shorten it. You see that in the bonus game with a scene on a raft that has no place in the game at all. You can also collect Ravens that allow you more hints. There again, if you find a clover in a scene, there's also a bird to find. I would definitely recommend this game. Any in this series is worth having.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great game! In this game you are trying to help Mark Twain. He appears as a ghost and asks you to help him with establishing the true author of Shakespeare's plays. He then needs help getting rid of an evil spirit that is still haunting him. He gives you lots of hints all the way through the game. You can talk to people in the various scenes for more clues. While you're finding hidden objects you're also collecting tools to use in solving the crime. The investigation takes you to many different locations. There are also mini-games to solve in between HO scenes. I thought this was a very interesting game. The only thing I had a little problem with was that some of the objects were tiny or hidden in a big jumble of other things and were very hard to see. But there is a very good hint system. In each hidden object scene you can find a raven, which means one more hint that can be used. These hints add up so you can have quite a few to help you in tough spots. There are also hidden 4-leaf clovers. If you find 70 of them this opens up the unlimited portion of the game. I definitely recommend this enjoyable game!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Real Historical Mystery - Nearly 500 Years In The Making It is a very rare game that can change my belief, and spark a quest for more knowledge but Midnight Mysteries: Devil On The Mississippi can and did for me. This game sent me on a quest for truth that has encompassed 3 books(one by Twain himself), one movie, and a Documentary. The story will grip you and never let you go. The graphics are excellent, engrossing, and sometimes frightening. The historical accuracy helps to draw you deeper and deeper into a mystery hundreds of years old, namely who was the real author of Shakespeare’s works. One answer is given to you but there remains dozens of alternative answers out there. I recommend this game to anyone from a harden fan of Mark Twain and Shakespeare to someone that just loves a good detective Story. Midnight Mysteries: The Devil On The Mississippi will not disappoint and will help you to learn more about the private life of one of America’s greatest writers, Samuel Langhorne Clemens aka Mark Twain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Of The Best BASED ON DEMO FIRST IMPRESSIONS I do love this game. It is much more exciting and dramatic than the 2 previous games, right from the first few moments. The intro will make you jump and flinch, and it sets the scene for all the cut scenes that will do the same. In keeping with the framework of the series, Mark Twain’s ghost (think, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer) visits you and asks you to help him find a solution to the ancient evils he unwittingly loosed on the world, after publishing a work proving Marlow was “William Shakespeare”. It involves time travelling to Twain’s era, then on to Shakespeare’s time, all on the mysterious ghostly river boat, “Pennsylvania”. SIGHTS & SOUNDS This series has a signature style to its graphics, and in this game, it works brilliantly. With the greater intensity and drama in this game, the colours – black, ectoplasmic green and ghostly blue mostly – suit the mood perfectly. Special effects, including some very dramatic and sometimes downright scary cut scenes, are excellent. The series also has a signature music score, which is again applied here, and is never overdone. There are no voiceovers, but it’s hard to really notice that. And the ambient sounds are a delight. MAKING PROGRESS I love the first scene in all these games – you are in your office (which doesn’t change from game to game), and you receive an unexpected ghostly visitor. This same scene acts as both introduction and tutorial, and it’s the best I’ve ever seen of attempts to do this. This is nicely balanced game, with a good measure of adventure, wrapped around 8 HOPs and a bit more of mini-games. HOPs are standard interactive lists with a twist, some objects are listed as if they were crossword clues. For instance, honey may be listed as: ‘bears love this’. Some, but not all, of the HOPs are visited twice. Without using hint, you can bring up a silhouette of the item you want. Very helpful. Easy but original puzzles. There is a good directional hint system, taking you all the way to the correct place, and a diary that is only good at summarising. The objectives list is a little more use. But there is little need, really, because most actions follow logically. More so than in the previous games. So it is not a very hard game, and it is also not very long. The game has a timer and I took 3hrs 30mins, which is pretty quick for me. BLING! This is not a CE, but you could be forgiven for thinking it was. There are two collectibles, ravens provide extra hints, and clovers, which are numerous (about 100 I think), and you need 70 of them to open up the unlimited HOP games. These are scenes in which you must find ALL the hidden objects (about twice as many as you get in the game). They are also both an achievement to collect, along with a dozen or so of other achievements. Many of them are quite hard. FINAL VERDICT It may not be as flashy as some of the newer games are, but it is a dramatic, exciting, and in-your-face thriller, that looks darn good and hooks you in from the opening scenes. It still rates a huge 5 from me.
