Dark Alleys: Penumbra Motel is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 76.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding SE Game! Solid entertainment...it was very creepy and for me it was a wonderful challenge. It was hard to take a break from playing because I was feeling Mary's anguish and just had to unfold this mystery and free her soul ! It was a lengthy game and having played it over a number of days, I lost track of actual hours. It was very atmospheric and the graphics, color, storyline, games, special effects were all stellar! Penumbra even made me personally feel the creepies and sadness of the tragedy...now that's the sign of a great game and great value IMO. BUT....all good things must come to an end! Right? Not only that....a very unsatisfying, abrupt, stupid ending! How can someone create such a fine game and not have enough imagination to give it an equally fine ending. I believe a good ending is just as important as the story, so I was disappointed. However, I loved the game and it definitely deserves 5 stars. I highly recommend it and wish we had more excellent SE games. For me, knowing my money is well spent makes my games even more enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ERS needs to go back to this type of game! Pennmom36 said it ALL in her review. A true adventure with LIVE ACTORS and good voice overs. sigh...... for the good old days with real challenge in games without transportable maps, writing down your codes, and true adventure with no HO scenes. (someone remarked to me recently that to make a true adventure without them the developer has to work harder - and all developers these days need to work a little harder even with HOs) Some of the puzzles were unique.. this game reminds me of a few others with the ramshackle buildings and rooms to explore. I LOVE creepy, dirty old places to explore. I would tag this a "paranormal thriller" maybe. ERS, get your old crew back together and bring us more like this !!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creepy and mysterious Start of this game was similar like in The Fog (which is also my favourite game). Car has an accident, you are inside with daughter of your friend and stop at the motel maybe to get help or to buy a snack. But the girl is kidnapped and the whole area does not look like at first. Everything is timeworn, crumbling, and strange things happen and ghosts are haunting the area. There are also strange locks on several doors, that are apparently somehow magic-modified, opened with war medals. Everything is pleasantly creepy, grim and dark. This is an adventure game - no HO scenes at all. But very nice game - I felt like inside Psycho thriller here and there. The only minus I had found - there is no map and hint does not show direction, only "here is nothing", but I can live with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dark Alleys: Penumbra Motel SE I played both editions back to back starting with the Collectors Edition which has music, concept art, wallpaper, screensavers and a bonus game. The CE also has collectible war medals and a task bar with listed objectives. This Standard Edition however is the better value in my opinion. The story begins with a road trip on Route 66 to take your best friends daughter Monica to visit her ailing grandmother. As you pull into what appears to be local gas station, little Monica decides to buy some snacks but as she reaches the entrance, a strange man abducts her and locks the door! Within seconds the normal appearance of the gas station transforms and now seems to be over 50 years old! Who took Monica and what exactly is going on in this decaying town? As you search for answers and try desperately to save Monica, you find film reels that start to paint a grisly picture. Over 50 years ago Zack Penum axe murdered his entire family in cold blood, his wife Ellis, daughter Mary and her boyfriend, and the eldest son Jack who had just returned from the war. A body was never recovered for the youngest member of the family, 11 year old Frank Penum, could he be the one responsible for taking Monica, and why?? You aren't going to find any Hidden Object Scenes in this game, not a single one, but I can assure you this game is worth it. Each and every scene is jam packed with areas of interest with plenty of inventory items to fix and use throughout the game. The mini games are very entertaining ranging from simple puzzles to brain teasers. The mini game I enjoyed the most required you to flip colored switches and then use directional arrows to guide color coded buttons to the correct color matched wires. This is one of those games that draws you in with a creepy ghostly paranormal plot and holds your interest throughout the game, enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a thriller! >>This game does not have -ANY- HOSs<< This game really sucks you in! We all know how it ends, why would it end any other way? The only difference is what is happening throughout the game. The game has real people portraying the characters (Like Mystery Trackers and Mystery Case Files) which really adds to the ambiance of the game. The little girl is kidnapped (not an original idea) and you must save her (Oh no! me?? Why me?!). The creep factor is high and the imaginations of the developers has no limits or bounds. They really pulled out all the stops on this one! The games range from hard to easy and are real 'thinker' games. Some are just plain aggravating (in a good way!). There is a bit of back and forth but you're not all over the map (which I don't remember- i don't think there is a map to show you where you are). Everything makes sense though and the game has a very curious flow to it. The hint button though is useless. It doesn't direct you anywhere and only helps when you are in an area that you have something that needs to be completed. I had to constantly look at the walk through to figure out where I needed to go next. That was the only real debbie downer I can think of. Length? I believe it took me 4 hours with a few breaks here and there to complete the game in full. Had I known this game was so great I would have bought the CE (I suggest buying the CE- even though I didn't). The music is fantastic! It pulls you into the game as if you really are there. It is very tastefully done and not overwhelming to the senses, there aren't any loud obnoxious noises that scare you; just 'whats next?' and a little heart pounding excitement!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Adventure !!! I really enjoyed this game !! I gave the demo a whirl and I was hooked,I had to run over and buy this one !! I loved the story, the music wasn't too bad,the graphics were good, there wasn't a whole lot of running back and forth, when you finished in an area-you were pretty close to done in that area, you didn't really have to go back.. I love the way they threw the service in there, even though the bad guy was a kook,it was still a tribute to our service men and women (thanks to all of them)... All in All I have to say,it was a very fun 5 hours of play, with no hints or skips...Thanks BFG this one was a winner !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Special If for no other reason than the wonderful sound effects, fun music and not too hard puzzles, this game is an excellent time. I found myself laughing out loud at times then enthralled in the artistry. Totally enjoyable game and I'm so glad to have found it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome Change From HO Games Those who like puzzle solving will love this game. Most of the objects you pick up in your inventory are usually needed within the same scene or one prior to or following. This was a fairly engrossing game to play. Took a little thinking and was not boring. The puzzles ranged from easy to moderately hard. Minimal running back and forth. Would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally .. No HO Scenes I really enjoyed this one. I finally found a game with 'zero' HO scenes. I was elated. I detest HO scenes. To me, they bring the momentum of the game to an abrupt and screeching halt. It's like being right in the middle of a good movie (at home) and someone knocks on your door. This is one of the best games I've found on Big Fish. Sadly, it's rare and almost impossible to find one not cluttered with endless junk piles. Although I liked everything about this game, I gave it an excellent rating in all categories just for that fact. Wish I could find more like this. If anyone can recommend more HO free games like this one (except for large file), I would be very grateful. If you are sick to the point of ad nauseam (as I am) of HO scenes, you will appreciate this one.
