Dark Realm: Queen of Flames Collector's Edition 4.6 5 142 142
Flame Banshees Your father tries desperately to hold back the flame banshees that have reduced your town to ashes. You run to the attic to retrieve the chest your mother has left you for this very scenario, inside you will find a magic medallion and magic boots that will allow you to escape unnoticed, they make you invisible until you are out of danger! The villagers, including your father have become minions of the banshees, leaving you no choice but to find the Queen and bargain for their lives. This won't be an easy journey, Valera, but your mothers medallion can help, magic is your only defense. There are 57 hidden flames to collect and you have magic boots that can be used to become invisible as well as your medallion which have several features such as the ability to turn statues to life. Some of the inventory items have + signs indicating that item can be opened, fixed or need to be combined with another inventory item before using. The Hidden Object Scenes are a mixture of interactive list finds, some items actually move to reveal a puzzle piece that will open a chest after everything has been found. I liked the HOS that required you to find the item matching a word in a sentence hidden in a mosaic picture. My favorite mini game was where you had to click when a ball reached the center green circle before crossing some boards, each time more balls were added and some of the balls had erratic movements before entering the green zone. This Collectors Edition comes with 57 collectible flames, Wallpapers, Soundtracks, the Making of, unlockable timed HO's, a Northpearl jigsaw puzzle, a game of cards, a card gallery, a Bonus Chapter and a built in Strategy guide, enjoy! W O W!!! This game has lots of new elements that have come into the Hidden Object Gaming industry. I was amazed and found myself saying, "WOW" out loud. This game rocks in every aspect of its existence. lol This will be one that you just have to get the collectors edition. It is loaded. Lots to download on wallpapers, soundtracks, Has tons to collect, morphing objects as well as flames that you find and cards (I didnt find one and may be wrong about how you get the cards) I played the full demo version and at the end, this dragon comes along and rocks your world lol, play it and see what I mean. Things I haven't seen in any HOG before..I am in love with this one. The music was FANTASTIC, I loved it, the voice overs rock, graphics are great, lots of cinemas too, I hope that continues throughout the full version of the game. The story line is unique and I was enthralled with it. This is the kind of game you get sucked into and just cant stop playing, you have to see what happens next. This is a 5 star all the way. Its mine on payday!!! October 2, 2014
can 100 stars not be enough to rate this GEM ?? When I saw that Mad Head was the creator of Dark Realm, my enthusiasm level perked up immediately. Their previous entry was the outstanding Cadenza which I noted was a strong contender for game of the year. Well, move over Cadenza because it has been surpassed by Queen of Flames. I cannot recall when a new game has thrilled me to the degree this one has. The initial cut scene was so realistic in presenting the characters that I knew then and there this game would be magnificent. While the story line is essentially nothing new in the fantasy world of games, its presentation to we game players is terrific. Like a great novel , this story grabbed me from the outset. Without a good story, most PC games ultimately fall flat. The first 5 minutes of Q of F instilled loads of suspense and a degree of terror that compelled me to continue. Valera is a young woman thrust into dire straits when her town is beset upon by banshees who set fire to her home and town. Her father presents her with a part of a medallion and tells her she is chosen to face and attempt to defeat the evildoers. Along the way she encounters an archer and her grandfather who offer assistance, at least in the demo. The graphics in Dark Realm are spot on, some of the best ever. The people look real, the fire looks real, the banshees are terrifying. ( it's too bad they look like men, when in folklore they are women ) Navigation in the game is often side to side, at least initially. I only wish the movement were a bit quicker. Valera is tasked with finding items which will help in her quest. There are a couple of traditional HOG segments which are well done. I particularly enjoyed a scene where a lady, presumably her mother, sings a tune and we must locate and secure items mentioned in the song. The puzzles in the demo were all easy to complete. I for one hope they become more challenging as the game progresses. There are cut scenes wherein the story evolves and the player must find and locate items. Recall another fine game, Child of the Forest, that did the same. I love the novelty of doing so. There are no apparent collectible items in this game. To that I say : who cares? A game this excellent doesn't need any gimmicks to sustain itself. Any HOPA player who cannot bring himself to affirm Q of F as one of the best games of this or any other year is having a bad day IMO. It's not often that I decide within a few minutes of a demo that I must acquire a game. I might have set a personal record with Dark Realm , it took me no more than 5 minutes to decide it is a must have. Thank you Mad Head. Once again this fine group of game creators has shown that with a greater degree of thought and foresight that a PC game can rise to a level of unsurpassed greatness. I urge all my fellow HOPA players to relish this game with all that it deserves. October 2, 2014
Dragons and Banshees and Flames, oh my! This game has everything! You are Valera, whose mother was some type of mage. She left you her Flame Medallion, that lets you become a "Stone Wisperer" and allows you to wake up the gatekeeper stones, and a dragon stone, and even a stone book -- all of whom tell you stories about your town and its origins. Eventually, I guess, you will find out why the banshees are setting your town of Northpearl on fire, and why they took your father. There is so much to see and do in this game. There are 4 modes, keeping with the flame theme - spark, flame, blaze and custom. You get your mother's magic boots, which let you become invisible to escape the banshees. There seems to be more room on the medallion, so I think you will gain more powers as well. The HOS puzzles are either lists, or parts of stories where you find an object the storyteller is describing. The mini-puzzles are quite unique with multiple steps. One of my favorites is, in order to cross a beam with flames all around, you have to "balance" yourself by pressing a target when a ball is centered on it - horizontally, then both horizontally and vertically, then diagonally. Besides a teleporting map and the boots, you have a journal, your flame medallion, and a quickly refilling hint button. The CE bling includes a flame to find in each scene - with an icon to let you know if you've missed one. There are morping objects in each HOS as well. Plus a "making of" - one of my favorites - that normally shows the developers at work/play. There is jigsaw puzzle to complete, and something called a Card Gallery, in addition to the normal CE bling of art, music, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and didn't even skip any of the puzzles! Try it and see! October 2, 2014
As Always, Mad Head Delivers! This time, travel back to the 1600's (?# to find dragons, fighting kingdoms, banshees and burning villages. I'm not one to care about storylines and haven't really figured this one out yet. Game play is what I care about and this delivers in spades. The graphics are stunning, HOS's are a variety - if you're used to Mad Head Games, you will recognize these. If you aren't used to Mad Head, I recommend you buy all of their games! The puzzles are tricky enough, but not too impossible to have to skip. Did I mention you can make yourself invisible - wish I had that power! There are collectable fire flames, tons of achievements and the extras have all the bells and whistles including some of the boring stuff, but also card games, the chance to find your missed collectables, 12 wallpapers, a jigsaw puzzle and the opportunity to re-do all the HO's to get bronze, silver and gold stars. Of course there is a bonus game #I haven't played yet). Mad Head always seems to come up with such a variety of types of games. Some developers stick to what they know and their games are easy to see a mile away. Mad Head's Nevertales is totally different from Cadenza and Right of Passage and now Dark Realm - which are all phenomenal games - continually raising the bar. October 2, 2014
Good one! Very impressive! There are so many fun parts to this game, I hardly know where to start. Love the story, to begin with...evil abounds and you must use your wits to survive and try to rescue your father. We have scrolling scenes, storybook puzzles, hidden flames, invisibility capability, magic powers, dragon eye hints, transporting map, journal and several options for difficulty....just love the whole thing! Most of the new games lately have not been well constructed, but this one makes you want to find out what will happen next. It's a super fun adventure! The graphics are excellent as well. Make sure to play the demo, even if these are not your kind of games, because the ending of the demo is brilliant! October 2, 2014
GAME OF 2014 Yes, this is what I recommend :) if there is a vote! its Mad Hatter. A hop with a real difference. I'm not going go over what others have written, but (always a but somewhere) this game is 110% enjoyable, exciting. full of surprises, music not at all boring it goes with the story line, graphics clear and beautiful. Story line is not what I have seen before. Also what I like if you have missed the collectables, you can go back and collect them. You can go back a play Hidden Objects and up your stars from Bronze to Silver. I truly RECOMMEND this game. If you are a first time player I would say start on the lower level and work your way up. It is a game that is worth playing again and again. Kudos to the Techies. October 3, 2014
stunning game!! I won't tell anything about the game itself, it's way too good, and I think you should discover it for yourself. This is the most stunning, breathtaking, gobsmacking, or any other superlative you can think off, game ever. I was lost for words after I played the demo and couldn't wait until the game came out. Now it has and I am the happiest fishie ever!!! After today it will be very hard to rate any other game 5 stars. I'm downloading now and will enjoy this game this evening, can't wait! Just try this game yourself and be baffled like I was. Enjoy!! October 2, 2014
Queen of Flames is Smokin' Hot! Medieval times. Castles, dragons, kingdoms, curses, medallions and..um...banshees. I think that covers it. Those elements alone will cause this to be a sure "fire" sale for many fishes - but there is more, much more. Setting: You are Valera, the daughter of a blacksmith, and your mother is deceased. Your town of Northpearl is under attack from fiery banshees. (side note: these characters are the weakest part of the game as they are the typical hooded, red-eyed soulless villains we?ve seen in dozens of other games.) You must escape and reach the Ivory Tower and speak to the Queen - because surely she can do something. Your friend Nathaniel will help you. The artwork is very well done, both in the standard as well as the cut scenes. The palette is heavy on the browns, golds and reds but is varied enough to keep your interest. For a fantasy game, the style has more realistic elements than most other games in this genre, but it still sticks to its fantasy roots. I liked the fact that the game play is quite varied. The puzzles are all quite different variations. I don?t think any of them have truly unique elements, but most represent a unique, or at least unusual, combination of elements. Hidden objects are primarily the standard list types with interaction for a few items. Most of the puzzles and HOS are easy to complete. There are four levels of difficulty, including a custom level. I don?t usually mention tutorials as I always decline them. However, this game presents a third option: a tutorial only for special features of this game. Great idea. The special features include magic boots and a medallion with special powers. This CE has 57 collectible flames, morphing objects (hard to find), 15 achievements, bonus level, strategy guide (did not use, but chs. 1 & 2 are in demo), 20 cards and 2 card games and other things that I refer to a pseudo extras which, if you have read any of my other reviews (thank you so much, by the way!) you know I do not care about. You also have a journal and a map. These type stories are not my favorite, but I would consider purchasing this one because of the high quality of artwork and varied game play. Five fiery banshees for Queen of Flames. October 2, 2014
MORE PLEASE!! This game is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! Won't go into all the different things about it, others have done most of it. Only one thing I can say against it....the Bonus Game was REALLY short. Very disappointed in that....only!! When you pay for a CE game you do expect the Bonus Game to be longer than 10 minutes or so. The actual Bonus Game story would've been great but only if they had given it more 'meat' per se. But, like I said, that's my only gripe!! October 4, 2014
