Fear for Sale: The 13 Keys 4.3 5 17 17
The Key To Nightmares Sam and Caroline Berkeley thought it would be a good idea to turn their inherited family mansion into the Hotel Berkeley, they were wrong! Something evil has taken up residency in room 13 (this is why hotels don't have room 13 or a 13th floor) Emma Roberts has agreed to investigate the haunting and hopefully rid the room of this entity who seems to feel that someone owes him something! The further Emma dives into this nightmarish realm, the more apparent it becomes that Sam's illness is no coincidence and Caroline may be the one who made the devil a deal! Finding 13 keys will be no easy task, finding someone to trust may be even harder! Just when you think Fear For Sale couldn't possible get any better, they release The 13 Keys...with even better graphics than the last (still think the water manipulations were top notch) and the music sets the beat for a long and frightful night. Trust me folks there aren't any fuzzy teddy bears or firebreathing dragons along for the ride in this game (well actually there is a fuzzy kitten but she doesn't get a free ride) nope the only thing you get here is Fear, this Fear is for Sale, and this ghost want's paid, "a deals a deal no matter what the price!" There are plus sign indicators on some of the inventory items that indicate that you will need to interact with that item before using such as opening the package or combining that item with another inventory item. The Collectors Edition has lot's of very interesting achievements to earn such as the Exorcist, Ghost Buster, # 1 Fan and the Keymaster, I always recommend reading through the achievements before starting the game, you may want to change the way you play the game in order to earn all available achievements. The Collectors Edition also has several collectible items, like 6 Venetian masks to collect, 6 Gamer collectibles, 6 Attraction, 6 Sweet Tooth and 6 Headwear collectibles, as well as 33 morphing items. You can customize the mode of difficulty and you can choose not to have a tutorial, or you can choose to just be shown the special features which I for one really appreciate. The Hidden Object Scenes are well done, some are interactive list finds, and some require you to find several fragmented pieces, however most of the HOS are interactive progressive silhouettes where you find the first object and use that object back into the scene to uncover the next item. If you aren't a fan of HOS you can choose the optional jigsaw puzzle offered. I was really impressed with the mini games which were clever and entertaining but certainly not frustrating. There is a lockpick puzzle where you use directional arrows, up, down, left and right to guide a ball from the left side to the right without hitting the column obstacles. Some columns are stationary, others move either up or down as indicated, but if the ball hits one of these columns it's game over and you have to start over from the beginning (suggest to write down the correct direction as you make it through each column) Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the Collectors Edition which has Wallpapers, Concept Art, Screensavers, Music, 30 Collectibles, 10 different Achievements, a Bonus Chapter, a built in Strategy Guide and a unique point system. You will earn points in several different categories, 250 points for each morph and achievement and 500 points for each Hidden Object Game and Mini Game solved, enjoy your stay, if you dare! Ghoulies and Ghosties and Things that Go BUMP in the Night! Oh boy! Does this game have it all! From ghosts who don't even remember who they were to rooms that change all around you! Your character is Emma Roberts (NOT the Emma Roberts related to Julia Roberts of Pretty Woman fame - lol). You have been asked to investigate the goings on at Hotel Berkeley. It seems guests are leaving in droves! Why? GHOSTIES (OH NO!) and things that go bump in the NIGHT! ooooooooooooo. Graphics were great. Finally, a DEV who knows how to color the night without using the magic blue crayon too much. THANK YOU! Sound was great as well. Voiceovers perfect. Lip syncing - check. Sound effects couldn't have been better, even the sound of the swinging gate at the opening scene. Love, love, love. There are 4 difficulty modes: Casual, Normal, Hard and .... yes .... "CUSTOM"! YAY! In the "custom" mode, you can turn on/off a lot of aspects of the game. For instance, check out what you can allow (or not) on the map. COOL BEANS! I didn't see a diary/journal but you get the coolest map. Again, check the "custom" mode because you can set it up to not only show where you are, but where the objectives/tasks are but if you get the CE version, where the collectibles and morphing objects are ............... ! wooo-hooooo! The HOGs (hidden object games) varied from silhouettes to list. In the list type, there was an alternative game you could play. I didn't play it so can't comment on that. The mini-games were fun and I didn't find them altogether difficult. There were some that were time-consuming and needing some thought, but not particularly difficult. IMO the ratio of HOGs to Mini Games was fairly even. I think this game has some length although the map was half-way gone through when the demo ended. You do go back and forth to the same locations quite a bit. Thank goodness for the transportable map. Whew! And, I can't believe the DEVS would let the story plot "out of the bag", so to speak, so early in the game. Caroline and Sam inherited the hotel, Sam is sick, Caroline is using Emma as the last of the 13 keys to make him well. Noooooo. This is a "Fear for Sale" game. There has to be more to the plot than that. And, THAT'S why I purchased this game. CE version and all. They had me at the morphing objects. I do feel that the whole ghosts in a hotel has been done and I got a sense of deja vu. Still and all, this is a great game with lots of mystery and, obviously, a conniving BF. I think it has enough entertainment value to make a great CE or SE game and I recommend it for everyone. Go ahead .... go.... the ghosts at the Hotel Berkeley await. Enjoy! November 22, 2014
Lucky 13 This is posted after playing the entire game. I have to admit, I bought this game by mistake and am I glad I did! I totally enjoyed this one. You see, I was playing the demo, and for whatever reason, didn't care for it, but forgot to delete it from my manager. I kept coming back to the game and finally I decided to buy it. Maybe there was something I missed, because I enjoyed the rest in the series. I started playing from the beginning and sure enough I had missed something at the very beginning, but found it the second time around. I really did enjoy this game. The graphics and sound were both excellent. That character who played Jack has been in something else and was well done. I didn't care for the attitude of the wife, but she was probably a problem anyway... LOL Music was acceptable and the voice over scenes as well as the effects, were excellent. All of the scenes, whether games or just story, were well done. Clear and clean. I just can't emphasize enough the quality of the art and sound. The challenge is there for people like me who don't care for mini games, but I did manage to play quite a few of them, so they might not be all that difficult. The hidden objects were of silhouette variety as well as the list so you got a little variation. The mini games are mini games and you either hate them because they're not hard enough or too hard. So I'll have to leave that up to your desires. You have an interactive map and I have to say it was a life saver. There is a lot of jumping around in the story and it would be extremely difficult without it. The hint is fast filling as was the skip for mini games. You also have a puzzle if you don't want to do the hidden objects (wish they would give that option for the minis), but I didn't play it. Wanted to, but was enjoying the hidden objects too much. Big Fish does a great job telling you what the story is about, so I'll critique it a bit. The story is well constructed and is easy to follow. I'm proud to say I didn't get lost not one time. I probably would have enhanced the ending a tad, but it was well enough done without my help. All in all this a darn good game and I would suggest that you at least try the demo and pay attention more than I did. It's a keeper for me. It's a fun game to play. The graphics and sound are excellent, and there is a decent story behind everything we do. What more could you ask. December 3, 2014
Super fun game! I really enjoyed playing this game. When I play a hidden object game, I like the hidden object puzzles to be different than your average find the object from a list type. This game has that with many variations. The story line is interesting and spooky, which is my preference. The scarier the better! It does not have any extras, such as morphing objects, or objects to find in every area. It is definitely a buy for me! November 22, 2014
Great game!! loved every minute of this game including the extra (played the CE) i highly recommand this game! not too hard, not too easy, i promise you it will be a few hours of great fun !! November 26, 2014
Great game Sometimes I get bored with the Hidden Object genre but this game is a step above. Excellent storyline, game play, graphics, it by far has been one of the more enjoyable games I've played here. November 24, 2014
Fun, have enjoyed this game throughout Don't write reviews but have really enjoyed this game and felt I should! Just that bit different from usual that recently found boring, kept my interest to the end.Good storyline, hidden objects not too difficult but still challenging. Not scary as title suggests December 28, 2014
One of my favorites so far... and not even a Collector's Edition! I loved the intertwined plot. It had enough twists and turns that it made it stand above many other hidden object games. I look forward to more like this! April 1, 2016
Very detailed! Appropriate amount of tension and nothing dull. Totally intriguing and keeps you guessing. Nothing in this game is disturbing, and in some respects is more like a serious version of a Grimm tale fairy tale (although this definitely isn?t a fairy tale, and is not for kids). GRAPHICS: clear details. In many places looks like photos. Most of the locations and scenes are very enjoyable. You don?t just stay at the hotel, but spend some quality time at a farmhouse, surrounded by beautiful farmland, and which includes a farm garden. Even though the characters say they were living very humbly, indoors they have some very nice furniture! (The must have inherited it!). Great PUZZLE mix. Lovely HOPS. An inventory that locks. Real characters. HINT button will help you as much as you need, and the JUMP MAP completely shows you where things need doing. January 26, 2016
Kept me occupied for hours on end Great mix of Hos and puzzles with a good story line. You can customise the levels of difficulty. Map instantly directs you to where the next action is to be done. Puzzles are challenging and do-able. Hos also have mini puzzles within them. I found it hard to stop playing as you just want to keep doing what needs to be done next. Can't wait to do another one of these. February 28, 2016
