Why This Game Isn't Getting a Fair Shake I took a look at the overwhelmingly negative reviews before I played this yesterday and did notice the main complaints were that it was: a) too hard & therefore frustrating and b) not a 'true' HOPA. So, as I always do, I tried it for myself. Love it (more on that later) so I was curious why there are so many negative reviews. I found the answer in the labeling. I think the issue here is two-fold. First, I recognize many of the reviewers here from HOPA game review pages that have come to expect the standard difficulty settings, hand-holding, Strategy Guides, unlimited hints, skip functions, etc.; basically a game that 'guides' you to the one and only ending there is. That is the exact OPPOSITE of this game in every possible way which ultimately resulted in many giving this game 1-2 stars. With that said... ...the issue that the Developers or whoever oversees the 'categorizing' should pay attention to: why categorize this game as "hidden object" when it couldn't be farther from it? This game is most closely associated with the 'Adventure' category and IMO, should have been labeled as such. To reach the target audience, and in doing so, receive fair reviews, then label for the target audience. As a result of the 'mislabeling'; there are HOPA players that downloaded this game with the assumption they would be demoing a standard HOPA. You don't have to imagine their surprise, you can read about it in the poor review section. The one and only saving grace is that there are also HOPA players who like a unique challenge or who, like myself, are also Adventure Gamers. You will find most of these people in the higher-ratings area. I hope you change the category because those that strictly play only "Adventure" games won't know to try this one! I hope that helps some people know what to expect before downloading it. Just in case, here's some more info. This game is in no way comparable to any HOPA you have played. This is truly Adventure-game based in its mechanics which means little to no help; the player 'guides' the game, meaning input and problem solving on the part of the player is the only way to proceed through the game. Frustration is to be expected-it's that feeling of accomplishment when you finally figure something out (along with a good story) that drives the Adventure game market. Games like this are usually not meant to be played in one-sitting or you get brain-drain so expect a longer game spread out over several days. The game itself is, as others have mentioned, similar to the game Rooms but definitely not directly comparable. This game takes that concept to new heights and does it well. It is challenging and often difficult; for me that's a blast of fresh air. I felt smarter just for playing the demo. Graphics are well-done and the atmosphere created is definitely somber and at times utterly terrifying. There are multiple endings so re-playability is high which is always a bonus. Players also have a responsibility to heed the warning label on this game. If dark, dreary and jump-out-of-your-seat scare moments are not for you, pass on this one. Similarly, I understand if a game is 'not for you' but wow there are some downright harsh reviews in this bunch simply for the game being too challenging. Its good to remember there are other "fish in the sea" that may actually enjoy this type of game and level of difficulty. I will definitely be purchasing this game; kudos to the developers for a job well-done. Calling all Adventure Gamers; hop on over here and give this a try! And please move this game into the appropriate category. It deserves much more merit than it is currently receiving. Cheers! January 30, 2015
If you DON'T want "easy" or "handholding" you are going to LOVE THIS!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this game! I beta tested it and it had me hooked from the very beginning. I read the other reviews and I really don't think people understand the gist of the game. It is NOT designed to be a HOPA or Adventure game. It's NOT designed to be EASY! And there's a reason there's a disclaimer saying if you're depressed or have anxiety or mental (maybe it doesn't mental but, you know, issues) don't play the game. There has been a real life game around for a few years now called, the Room, where you have to find your way out of a room with very few clues and it's scary and it's hard. This game is exactly like that .... but taken up a few notches. The game starts with the disclaimer - loud and clear! So, for those who boo-hoo the game's creepiness or whatever, READ and LISTEN TO the Disclaimer. There's a bad, ugly witchy-type person and a creepy looking good-type witchy person that you interact with at the beginning. LISTEN CLOSELY to what each has to say. You are instructed to find the door with the seal. The seal doesn't appear until you get NEAR the correct door - how cool is that??!! Then, the door takes you BACK to where you started with the 2 witchy-type women who speak to you again. NOW, find the spell ... except there are few to no clues. There are hands that jump out of pictures - FREAKED ME OUT!!!!! There are portraits that change - did I scream??? YOU BET! Did I get frustrated??? Yes. Because the "journal/diary/clue sheet" didn't work during the beta so I was REALLY working blind. I haven't had an opportunity to try the demo yet. Hey, being honest here. But, even with the glitches of the beta I couldn't WAIT for this game to be released and now it has and I AM SO GETTING IT!!!!!! This is NOT designed for people who want "easy", "hand-holding", "lots of clues" and "being pointed in the right direction". This IS a game for those who want haunted house creepiness, few or NO clues, NO sappy mini games, NO easy hand-holdingness (yes, I invented a word), DIFFICULTY at it's BEST and NOTHING like you've ever seen before. Also, maybe a little introspection into yourself??? NOT for beginners. NOT for the feint of heart. NOT for the impatient or easily distracted. Play the demo. This is a game designed, IMO, for a select group of players. Are you one of them???? Come on and meet me in the room and let's try to escape .... the EMPTINESS. January 29, 2015
VERY very HARD GAME AND VERY very DIFFERENT The game is intended to scare s**t out of players! I bought the game! Cool gameplay and idea. THE Emptiness doesn't really a hidden object or a quest game... it is something different and definitely interesting. We are looking for symbols in a house. Nasty spirits and visions pop-up all the time! We are dealing with personal choices and preferences. Game objects and tasks are quite logical, which is good. I recommend to try it. January 30, 2015
Different type of game Based on 1 hour demo play This game is very different from most BFG games and although there are hints and goals along the way it takes a lot of input from the player to figure out the next move. You have to be engaged and look closely at everything. The game is more about solving given tasks than anything else. I thought the graphics were quite good and clear and navigation was easy. Nothing ever seemed obscure. The movement is within a 3D environment. I thought it was rather more difficult that most games. I found it very rewarding when I figured things out and encourage players to be patient and keep trying if they find the initial minutes very difficult. I enjoyed it very much and will purchase. challenging, but exciting Based on 3 hours of gameplay: First it seemed dull to me. Maybe just because it took me too long to find the "T" letter from the first spell. Later it became really interesting to look for the new letters at the same locations. The hints didn't let me stuck again (like with the first word). The mini games were of different types. Some were rather challenging, but not too difficult to skip them. The game is not really scary, but there are some creepy moment, which helped to create the special "suspense" atmosphere. Overall, it is not another standard HO game. It's always great to try something new. January 30, 2015

Scared the pants off of me! Brilliant! If you're looking for something a bit different, like a challenge and enjoy getting frightened on a regular basis then take a look at this game! I'm not going to try to describe it, you will have to see for yourself! Suffice to say it challenged me and I suspect most of you will find the same. I have never seen a game like this before and I've bought it on the strength of the trial (which this review is based on as I haven't had time to play the full game ................... yet)! Love this Game!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!! If I were to describe the game in one word: CHALLENGING ! Word of warning: If you are looking for the usual story line, crowded HOG scenes, hand holding maps and sparkles that show you where to go and a hint system that is helpful, this is NOT your game. It does requires you to put more time and thought into things as you progress. It's different and refreshing and I actually feel like i am playing the game and not just going through the same old boring motions that a lot of games have become....I mean how many times can the same game play style be recycled? I hope this is a sign of more games like this coming to BF. Most of us are not kids we are adults who badly want more intense game play that is geared more for our age. This game is both eerie and creepy as well as challenging and i have truly enjoyed the change of pace it has brought to the table. January 30, 2015
WOW! At last....... At last a truly challenging game which expects the player to use their brains, patience and keen eyesight, with no quick fixes and no hand-holding. I can see why it was put into the Hidden Object category, because the letters of the spells (or the words that open the doors) are hidden in the scenes. But that is where the similarity ends. This harkens back to the "good old days" when games were made deliberately tough. This like a cross between Myst and Realms of the Haunting. I am a couple of hours into it and cannot wait to see where it will take me. But I'm in no hurry, games like this are rare these days and I want to savour it! About the warnings for those with nervous disposition and weak hearts - well yes, things do leap out at you and will make you jump, so be warned. But as yet there is nothing truly gruesome. Also, there are choices in some of the side-games, you choose what you want to be. As the story unfolds I think that will be important - what you are will reflect the experience you have! Anyway....gotta go folks, I want to get back to the game. Thank you Big Fish for taking a chance on a developer with something new to offer sometimes game-weary players who long for something more than pretty pictures and all the answers upfront. Finally! Finally we are offered more than the same old, same old game. I welcome any game that will break the boredom of the usually same game offered here on big fish. In the last year there has only been one game that breaks the pattern of fairy tales, love kingdoms and cutey side kicks. That game (perhaps you know the game) is a very long awaited squeal promised this Spring. Emptiness is about evoking emotions thru pictures and sound effects and these devs have done it. I always love to see games that step away from the norm. Bought it . Hope others will see a fresh air in games coming from Big Fish. Please continue BF January 29, 2015
