2014 has been a good year for Android. While the iPhone has slipped to just 11.7% of the market share of phones sold, Android phones have risen to control 84.7%. Out of 301.3 million smartphones sold in 2014, 255.3 million were Android.
Of these devices sold, 29.3% of Androids were made by Samsung, (that’s about 74,802,900 Samsung smartphones if we crunch the numbers). The most popular of these phones feature screens that are 5 inches or larger.
With such an increase in Android ownership, it’s not surprising to see success in the main source of Android apps – the Google Play Store. The United States led the world in Google Play downloads for 2014.
