Happy Anniversary Pac-Man! As Pac-man turns 35, we take a moment to look back on one of the most iconic and well-known video games of all time. Created in 1980 by Toru Iwatani, the game is still a hit today with over 30 official spinoffs. With over 43.24 million copies sold to date, this arcade-style maze game joins an elite class of favorites. Debuting in 1981 on Atari, the game has since been released on multiple platforms but is perhaps most well-known for the arcade cabinet style of play. In fact, Pac-Man is so well known, the main character is recognized by 94% of American consumers.
In English, the four ghostly “bad guys” that chase Pac-Man around the game board are named Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde. Additional game releases have added subsequent characters, creating an entire Pac-Family. Some notable Pac-People include Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, President Spheros, Sir Cumference, and Spiral.
