In the rise of mobile gaming, people are always asking who is playing, and what they are playing on. Since the introduction of the Apple iPhone in 2007, things have changed – and quickly. As third party developers rushed into the App store marketplace on iTunes, and shortly after, Google and Amazon, new mobile games are everywhere and at low cost. Currently, there are an estimated 350 million mobile phones available with gaming features.
Gamers report being fans of mobile also, with 36% playing on smartphones and 35% playing on a different wireless device. Pew Internet and American Life Project surveyed teenagers across the US and 46% of US teens play games on either a cell phone or a PDA. These teens aren’t all older either, showing that 71% of teens aged 12-14 play games on a portable gaming device. This foreshadows an expanding future for the mobile gaming industry.
