The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York has inducted it’s first games into it’s World Video Game Hall of Fame. The museum’s website describes these as games that, “have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general.” The first inductees of this exhibit include: Doom, Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and World of Warcraft. Status for the games chosen included icon-status, longevity, geographical reach, and influence.
The Strong Museum is a highly interactive museum dedicated to, “the history and exploration of play.” With over 55,000 items and growing, this location offers a truly extensive gaming and historic experience. The museum set up is collection based. These collections include:
- International Center for History of Electronic Games
- National Toy Hall of Fame
- World Video Game Hall of Fame
- Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play
- Woodbury School
- American Journal of Play
