Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What I tell you three times is true.
~ Lewis Carroll, The Hunting of the Snark
Omne Trium Perfectum (everything that comes in threes is perfect)
If you watched the fantastic video above, you’ve learned that your brain loves things in threes. We like to have choices, but not too many choices (Hence – Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Too much, too little, Just right!).
Our brains are easily able to comprehend things in threes. The moment you add another element, things get slightly more confusing and complex. Creating a hair braid with three strands happens almost naturally. When try to go for four strands it’s much more difficult and takes time to learn (DIY videos are called for!).
3 is also common in the world and life. The earth is the third planet from the sun and we have three kingdoms on earth: animal, vegetable, and mineral. We experience birth, life, and death. 3 is the first prime number and it’s the closest round number to π. There are also three dimensions in space (that we know of).
The triangle is the most simple and stable shape. Take a look around you at different buildings, bridges, and structures that take advantage of this shape. This is because each side braces the other two sides, preventing them from moving in relation to each other. The most stable form is the pyramid.
Examples of 3 in Fairy Tales, Mythology, and Literature:
A Christmas Carol (3 ghosts)
Rumpelstiltskin (Spins 3 times and allows the heroine to guess his name 3 times)
The 3 Musketeers
The 3 Little Pigs
Billy Goats Gruff (3 goats)
Beowulf (Beowulf fights 3 monsters)
Harry Potter (Harry, Ron, and Hermione form a Power Trio)
Famous trilogies (A beginning, A Middle, An End):
The Lord of the Ring
Okay, now that I have you convinced that “3” is a thing, it’s time to talk about the Match 3 genre.
Bejeweled was released in 2000 and is widely thought of as the flagship match 3 game. PopCap, the creator, estimates 10 billion collective hours of Bejeweled play by roughly 500 million people around the world. It’s also introduced one of the most mirrored puzzle game mechanics.
Bejeweled was initially available through Microsoft for online play (with advertisements). Then it became available for download as Bejeweled Deluxe, with clearer graphics and an ad-free experience.
In 2004 the game came loaded into the popular Motorola Razer with the advent of mobile gaming. And then in 2007 it was a launch game for the first Apple iPhone. The touchscreen technology was perfect for the Match 3 experience.
Since the original release of Bejeweled, the Match 3 genre has expanded drastically, with different strategies, storylines, and structures. You can swap gummies, animals, jewels, monsters, sea creatures, and much more. You can play hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of levels that never get old because of added gameplay elements.
