“Yet another great game in the Dark Romance series! I love switching between the two characters - it adds a nice change of pace and additional challenges. I always appreciate the ability to choose easy or hard mode for each mini-game and whether I would rather play hidden-object or match-3. Tons of collectibles too! Definitely looking forward to this game being released as a CE!”  - beta tester

“A beautiful game that reaffirms the magic of a classic and well-loved story. Domini is definitely in the Top League of game makers, continuing their magical way of merging puzzles and mini-games with the storyline in a way that enhances rather than distracts. Each new episode of their series stands taller than the last, and I look forward to each one.”  - beta tester

Dark Romance: Hunchback of Notre-Dame Collector's Edition is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it Ever since the first ever series was released, I have played every single one of them. A lovely mix of HO and puzzles, great storyline and I loved the fact that you can switch characters, which is always refreshing in terms of a HO game. Can never get enough of this series and wish developers released more faster!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Enjoyable and Fun Dark Romance is a great series, and I always look forward to new games from it. One of the features I like best is that the game has indicators that tell you when a collectible is available somewhere in the location. I HATE missing collectibles just because I sometimes forget about them while distracted by the story or ambiance, so this feature helps me keep on top of the collectibles. Collectibles in this game include gold bracelets, tarot cards, and diary pages. With the gold bracelets, you can buy dresses and jewelry for your boudoir, which is a cute extra piece. I really liked the storyline in this game! It was a clever twist on the classic Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is always something I appreciate. Storyline doesn't make or break a game for me, but I do notice whether it's good or bad. It was good! The ambiance was very attractive, as with all Dark Romance games. Beautiful purples, lots of detail put into the rooms and closeup scenes. They always put a lot of thought into the feel of Dark Romance games. You get to switch back and forth between characters, which is a newer feature (last couple of years) that I like. One thing I didn't enjoy was at the end of the main game. It kept switching back and forth between the two characters so frequently, seemingly to draw out the game, and while I appreciate longer play time, they didn't cover up how they drew it out longer well. It was blatant. Not a dealbreaker obviously, just a detail I didn't love. A couple of the items you use to accomplish tasks were also...questionable. There's a ferret in this game, but he's not a helper who sticks with you the whole time. He pops up here and there, but not much. Some people don't like this, but I don't mind at all. I think it's nice. Overall I enjoyed the game and would recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dark Romance: Hunchback of Nortre-Dame Collector's Edition I liked playing this game because it was a game based on the history of Paris and I like playing games based on history or geography

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enchanted Parisian Cathedral We switch characters in this game from Captain Frederic to Esmeralda, back and forth. I enjoy this game. The tarot cards morph. The golden bracelets can buy you dresses and jewelry. The diary pages can be read. I did skip a lot of puzzles as I was inpatient with them. I liked most hops except the slide rule one that I switched to match 3 instead. I was looking for a collectible as soon as I got to a scene and was disappointed there weren't more. If you did the trial it ends at the beginning of chapter 2. It has 3 chapters + bonus. The bonus chapter has good and bad fortune for Esmeralda. This is the tenth game in the series with my favorites, Vampire in Love, Curse of Bluebeard, Winter Lily and A performance to die for. Replay 18 hops, 15 mini-games, 5 music and 32 movies. You have 10 wallpapers and 10 concept art. I won't use these wallpapers. I would have liked the wallpaper of just some beautiful scenes without characters. Maybe a scene with the Gargoyle or the Cathedral.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A VALENTINE DELIGHT TO REJUVENATE YOUR LOVE FOR HOP GAMES! REVIEW BASED UPON THE ENTIRE GAME: 3 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 51 Pages (This is a long game) OVERVIEW: You, Captain Frederic de Bone, have been summoned by Cardinal Frollo to aid in the apprehension of the criminal, Quasimodo. The Cardinal believes that the street dancer, Esmeralda, is in danger from this criminal and you have been asked to bring her to the court for protection. You are off to Notre Dame Cathedral, the haunt of Quasimodo to try to apprehend him. Be warned! While engaged in hunting down this criminal, you will uncover some unsettling details concerning the Cardinal and his true intentions concerning Quasimodo and Esmeralda. OPINION: What a sweet surprise for Valentine’s Day! I loved playing this game. I found the game is fast-paced with a well-written story. The Victor Hugo story is an excellent backdrop for this game. As always, Domini has included those little extras which other developers don’t. The game is long with fantastic, well-designed puzzles and HOP scenes. As in their other games, Domini provides an “easy” and “hard” version for most of their puzzles. My only complaint are the graphics. Although they are realistic, I feel the colors are garish with too much purple and neon green. I wish Domini would use more subtle colors in their games. MECHANICS: There are four (4) levels of play including a customized version. There are thirty-three (33) achievements. Collect fifteen (15) diary pages, seventy (70) golden bracelets (used to purchase items for your boudoir), and fifteen (15) morphing tarot cards. There is an indicator on the inventory bar which indicates when there is a collectible within the scene. You play two characters, Captain De Bone and Esmeralda, switching periodically between them within the game. There are ten (10) wallpapers along with concept art and music and video sequences. You can replay fifteen (15) mini-games and eighteen (18) HOP scenes. BONUS CHAPTER: It is a sequel. It is a long chapter well-worth the additional price of the collector’s edition. Esmeralda receives a letter from King Louis XII informing her that she is his illegitimate daughter and heir to the throne. However, the king’s wife, Agatha, has other plans for Esmeralda in her own quest to become queen of France. You continue to collect the collectibles within this chapter. The HOP scenes and mini-games are similar as those in the main chapter. There are nine (9) mini-games and five (5) HOP scenes. HOP SCENES: There are nineteen (19) scenes within the game. You can play a Match-3 game in lieu of the scenes. Domini has upped their game with the HOP scenes. They are innovative with some creative flourishes. They are varied in style. They include scenes with lists of items, matching, rebus clues, spot-the-differences, and silhouette. There are also storybook scenes with items to be removed in highlighted letters. My favorites are the scenes with the rebus clues and those with the sliders in which the player must slide a silhouette over a listed item to remove it. MINI-GAMES: There are thirty-four (34) mini-games within the game. They are superb with most having the option to be played in either an “easy” or “hard” mode. My only complaint is that I wish Domini would have offered more of the puzzles to be replayed. Less than half of the puzzles are available to be replayed. SPOILERS: HERE ARE SOME OF THE PUZZLES AFTER THE DEMO: A. Tangram puzzle. Place tiles with grooves in them for emblems on a grid so that all the tiles cover the emblems with no emblem left uncovered. B. Switch puzzle. In a variation of dominoes, switch segments with two symbols on them so that the symbols on each segment match up with the segment next to it. C. Maze puzzle. On a grid, move an incense burner to locate bees hidden underneath a series of cells. You must locate all the bees (by trial and error) in a specific number of moves. D. Switch puzzle. Switch colored gemstones on the top and bottom of a 3-tiered grid so that the combination of the colors on the top and bottom equal the color of the symbol in the middle. E. Maze puzzle. Move two gems through a maze at the same time to the middle of the grid. The gems will mirror each other in their moves. BONUS CHAPTER F. Connection puzzle. Connect flowers with their matching colored gemstones without crossing lines. G. Physical puzzle. Move a bucket out of the well clicking on roots to move them out of the way. If a root hits the bucket you must start again. H. Logic puzzle. Paint a spiral so that no two colors which are next to each other are the same.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Save the girl! Hello friends! Unless my count is off, this one makes #10 in this series. As always, I review mostly on the game play and leave the story review to others who do a much better job than I. Graphics are very well done, even with the occasional blur, which isn't bad at all. Colors are very bright and clear, and have a lot of purple and blue, but is still quite nice. Animation is exrtemely well done, very smooth and realistic. Game play was excellent, with no problems during the demo. The voices okay, and are age and character appropriate. Didn't notice as much emotion in the speaking as in other games in this series. Still, nicely done. Sound FX were okay, but not a lot of them. HOPs are a variety of silhouettes, and highlighted words. Hopefully there is more than this as the game progresses. Scenes are very clean and clear and items were not difficult to find. As usual, you can switch to a match 3 game. Puzzles were not difficult, and did not take any time or thought to complete. We can still choose between easy and hard for the puzzles and the full game play as well, for those who want more challenge. Hint system is very helpful and it does transport to longer locations, by opening the map and showing you where your next move is going to be. As always in this series, we have a great map. It clearly identifies the area by picture and name, as well as showing you where you may have missed a collectible. You can choose not to have this "hint" if you wish a bit more challenge here as well. I like the collectibles in this series. Some are quite challenging to find, due to size or placement. We need to find 15 tarot card that also morph, making them a bit more difficult to easily spot; 70 gold bracelets that we use to buy items for the boudoir...these are easy to overlook; and 15 diary pages. These can be anywhere and different sizes. The title tells you what the game is about, sort of. It is partially true to the real story, but so far, is well done. This game flowed very well and was easy to follow. Again, we can switch characters and play both sides. Most of the challenge was in finding the collectibles. Even though every game in this series is pretty much the same story, with just a different title and characters, I like them. There is not a lot of action, but enough character interaction to keep me interested. I think most all levels of players will find this one entertaining and somewhat challenging. I gave this one a 4.5. Yes, I am adding it to my collection of CE games. As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews. Play on!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A TERRIFIC GAME WITH SOME GREAT PUZZLES Dark Romance the Hunchback of Notre-Dame is a surprising game that has some good news and then some bad news. In the past year I have become very tired of HOPA games that have become heavy on the “P” while cutting down on the “HO” aspect of my favorite genre. Recent games have been top heavy with nothing more than puzzle after puzzle BUT the great news about The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is that the puzzles are terrific and seem to fit well into the storyline. I am not overly fond of finding more puzzles than HO scenes but I loved the puzzles this time around. The puzzles were not simply gratuitous and thrown in because some gamers have been very vocal about wanting more puzzles, but they actually made sense to have them in the game. When I first started playing the Hunchback of Notre-Dame I didn’t think it was a game I would like for several reasons, primarily the dialogue and voice acting were terrible and really put me off. Esmeralda who should have been portrayed as sensuous with a smoky voice sounded more like a squeaky child. The next thing that I didn’t care for is the soundtrack where the music is awful. This is the first time that I have ever turned off the music in a game and it is unfortunate because the sound is something that I feel adds to the entire experience of playing a HOPA game. I would be very surprised if some of the beta testers did not complain about the music when they did the survey but of course it would be too late to ditch it and begin again with different music. The HOS in the game did not really seem as good as they generally are in games from this developer. Domini is one of my favorite game developers and their HOPS have always been some of the best. However, I was not swept away by the HOS in this game primarily because of the style and that the items were very difficult to find in the first two HOS. There were a few scenes that I thoroughly enjoyed while others left me feeling quite ho-hum about the game. For a gamer who does not like puzzles I was surprised by how much I loved the puzzles in the Hunchback. This is a CE game where I actually look forward to replaying some of my favorites in the bonus content for the game. All in all even though the game is not a five-star game, I do feel that it deserves a solid four-star rating. Even though Dark Romance the Hunchback of Notre-Dame is one that I enjoyed, as always, please try the demo to see if this is the game for you. Happy gaming!
