Mystery of the Ancients: Black Dagger is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Valor of Their Ancestors is Killing the Descendants An evil king is trapped in his castle and defeat seems inevitable. But the old reprobate has one more trick up his sleeve. He puts his soul into a dagger just as the leaders of the rebellion break through the castle gates. They have won, but only temporarily! Many years later you are called in to help investigate an attack on a police station by Detective Duncan. He knows your reputation with supernatural cases. An attacker with superhuman strength has ravaged the local police station and your help is needed. Good stuff: A variety of HOPs, lots of mini-games and puzzles, great artwork, and a well written mystery story unite to form the newest entry in the Mystery of the Ancients series. Bad stuff: I really like the story and the game play, but I had to deduct one star for bad logic, which reared it's ugly head and kept me from completely enjoying the story and game play. I won't depress us both by listing the sad details, but hopefully you can see past them. Bottom line: I played through the CE version and enjoyed it, but ran into trouble with some of the longer puzzles when they did not work as intended. If you did not try the Demo when the CE came out, please try it now. The bonus chapter was fine, but I would not have missed it if I'd waited for the SE. This leaves you with an open field to choose either version. Good gaming.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The 3rd descendant What a lovely and easy-going game. Good tempo, solid gameplay, and an interesting twist in the bonus round. You get to collect crowns and some figurines in the microscenes. overall rating: 4,3

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too Short and weak logic BASED ON COMPLETED GAME I won't bore you with all the details that have been reported already. Bottom line = this is a good game BUT there are some really big logic errors that pull you right out of the dream/fantasy (which is very intriguing and draws you in right away - until you have to do something really stupid, that is.) Second issue is the length. It's too short. I finished the whole game in a couple of hours and was looking for more. There are three main characters that you have to go after to save the world: two of those happen during the demo, one in the main story, and one chapter jumps back into the memories of a character. Couldn't believe I'd gotten all the way to the last chapter that quickly. I feel like I gypped, actually. Good thing I got it as a free bonus game. It had great potential. All of the elements were there but, to me, it fell short of the usual quality of the Mystery of the Ancients Series - mainly because it was over too soon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Far too short I guess I'm gonna buck the trend and say that I was disappointed with this game, not for the storyline or game play, which were kept switched-up and interesting throughout, but for the shockingly short game length. I've never had to complain about a single game's length in all the time I've been reviewing, but after teasing us with such a variety of characters, scenes and themes, the developpers cut the game off so abruptly that it felt kind of merciless. This game took exactly half as long as any other I've played, using the same settings. And sure, many games out there ARE over-long, but I think that justifies cutting 45 minutes off at most... not 2 hours or more! But as many reviewers seem satisfied with the quality rather than the quantity, I suspect it won't be an issue for everyone. If you like a good 4-5 hours long game though, you may wanna keep searching elsewhere.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too short! Not bad quality, but this game barely lasted beyond the demo.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Challenging Enough Another game that is just the same as all the others that have recently been released. Mundane tasks, over and over again. So many tools that need their other part found, only to be rusty and need oil. How many jars of oil do you really need to oil all these hinges, tools, and metal plates? Can't you just keep one jar on hand? There wasn't near enough good puzzles to keep me entertained. A lot of little puzzles that you mindlessly clicked on numbers that you already had the code for taped up beside the lock. That is not a puzzle. Very few mini games that were not challenging, and the story was just so so. I have a folder that I keep my played games in, called "Don't Replay - Game Sucked". This is just another game, that I couldn't wait to finish, and add to this folder along with all the other games that I have played this past year. I think that's it for buying new games, if the dev's can't come up with anything new or challenging, as I will just replay all my old games that I purchased 4 to 6 years ago, which were really good.
