Jewel Quest: The Sleepless Star is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Jewel Quest: The Sleepless Star Excellent storyline. Beautiful graphics. A variety of boards and challenges keeps the gameplay interesting. On some boards, cutscenes are added to the left as the jewel board is being played, with the shape of the board matching the story. When you fail several boards, you are given the artifact for untimed play, but can only earn one star while in use. Kudos to anyone who is able to earn the elusive gold star on all the chapters. I only earned gold on Chapters One-Two-Three-Four as the boards were much too challenging to earn gold on Chapters Five-Six, even with the help of the turtle (time) or bird (points).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthy addition to the Jewel Quest series Pros: timed/untimed modes, varied challenges, good storyline Cons: may run slowly, frustration factor The fifth game in the Jewel Quest match 3 series features some of the M3 gameplay seen in previous JQ games along with new challenges such as boards with hidden spaces to uncover and new obstacles to defeat. This is also the first JQ M3 to offer a true untimed mode, although it must be enabled first. There are powerup artifacts to collect as you progress as well as a board ranking to earn on each board. The storyline is played out in cutscenes in between boards and is skippable if players wish, but is very watchable. A nice feature is that the story continues to update itself in popup pictures that appear to the left of the jewel boards as they are being played, and the shape of the jewel board itself is often relevant to the part of the story depicted. I gave 4 stars only for two things. First, there is no option to disable high detail for the graphics in the game options. It's nice that the jewels now disappear in puffs of smoke for instance, but players with older computers or those with less sophisticated graphics cards may experience slow play action on some board styles. Another is that slower players will likely find themselves getting frustrated on particular game stages that require a quick thinking/quick clicking strategy to win even in untimed mode. On the other hand, long time JQ junkies might find this installment overly easy if they play with all the help enabled. But still, it's a worthy addition to the Jewel Quest legacy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Extreme Game Don't know why some many people love this game. It is very difficult to get through. No option to skip boards. If you love your family, don't play this game. You'll take your anger out on them. If you care about your sanity, don't play this game. It will make you crazy. If you really want a challenge, then play this game. Be warned, it takes a very long time to get through it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mediocre Story - Great Puzzles The story line is really weak. Mostly they aren't great but this one is very predictable. The puzzles are difficult enough to keep you playing. Occasionally hangs up on exit. Using W-7.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Goo, but too slow Although it offers new features such as: untimed mode, good variety of boards, good and colorful graphics, differents levels of challenging,...is very slow, even playing it on a brand new mac pro. The jewels take too long to fall and you have to wait them stop. You just stares, unable to continue playing! I like more when you can click even when they are falling. It would be much more enjoyable if it were faster.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Old, slow, and irritating The graphics are dated and mildly grainy. The music, such as it is, is ok but nothing to write home about. The noise the jewels make as they tumble is mechanical and unpleasant. The game is very slow, in part due to ponderous sequences of pop-ups, pop-up words flashing, and other uninteresting things that you cannot dismiss by clicking. The jewel boards are not particularly appealing, and you cannot make matches while the jewels are falling from the match you just made. If you make a match that results in a lot of jewels tumbling you have to sit there waiting while this mechanical gem falling-noise grinds repetitively against your ears. You will spend more time watching pop-ups and jewels cascading then you will playing the game. This is especially galling as the game is timed but you can't affect your score by making matches quickly (which is sort of the point of match 3 games so this "feature" makes no sense). The custom cursor is quite clumsy and doesn't respond to mouse movements well, which may be due to the game's age and inability to run well on newer computers. Unfortunately, the game is so old-fashioned they apparently hadn't heard of giving the player the option of using the system cursor, so you're stuck with their clunky one. Add in the annoying intrusion of compulsory tutorials showing you the most basic elements of a match 3 and silly story cards winking at the edge of the screen (and your peripheral vision) and the fun factor just sinks to zero. It felt like work churning through the demo period. I'd rather rake the leaves or shovel snow then play this irritatingly slow and noisy game. Match 3 games have come a long way since this old thing - thank goodness.
