House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets Collector's Edition is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 277.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing game This amazing game was issued in 2011, so written in 2010, but the CE version actually has collectibles called “Beyond Objects” (In the main game only; I don't know how many I found, because they never tell you, but I think I got most of them). Excellent adventure story, as Kate, a writer who does paranormal novels, is contacted by her ghostly grandmother to go to a sort of “Flying Dutchman” of houses, which randomly appears at different places around the world. You learn what it is about during the game. The bonus game is another story about Kate, vindicating her grandmother and friends whose reputations were ruined when they accused a prominent man of killing the lover of his daughter. Because he had the money and power, he silenced them; at least in this life. Kate needs to find the body and reunite the lovers. There were allusions to Ouija boards which I suppose was ok, I thought it was just dumb and didn't really add to the game. Both games are riveting and great for HO lovers, although there were some pretty good puzzles in there too. Again these are not action packed zippy games, but fun adventures with a more leisurely pace. And they are _long!_ One almost gets spoiled with these older games that give you a lot of game for your buck. I'm off to play the others in this series, after a break. I find it's best to alternate the types of games I play so I can appreciate them more:) I highly recommend this game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets is destined to be a Fan Favorite!!! House of 1000 Doors is something of an odd case, since the story that the player finds themselves participating in has very little to do with the plot they're promised at the outset. Never the less it's a really interesting and fascinating HOPA! After a chilling opening movie, the main character is contacted by a ghostly relative, and told that the only way to clear their family's name is to go to the house. So the player does, and finds herself tasked with traveling to the sites of a variety of murders—all involving a tragic death in the past (some more gruesome than others)—and solving puzzles to put the ghosts involved to a peaceful rest. The bizarre part is that the main character's relative isn't mentioned. The nature of her scandal never comes up, and by the time the end of the game rolls around I'd almost forgotten what the point of the whole endeavor was supposed to be in the first place. It wasn't until the main character mentions in her final monologue that she'd gotten the evidence she needed to vindicate her ancestors that I was reminded of the game's purported storyline—and mildly annoyed, since nothing like that had actually happened. After beating the game I discovered that the main story—really the entire central plot of the game, is entirely dealt with and resolved in a bonus unlockable chapter that's included only in the "collector's edition" of the game. Luckily the publishers were kind enough to provide me with that version for review, but I worry that anyone playing the standard game would come away completely disappointed (and somewhat baffled) by the utter lack of a resolution. With all the ghosts, murders, and tragic histories one would expect from a gothic melodrama, House of 1000 Doors does a great job of finding an eerie tone for the game and giving players a consistent level of challenge as they explore their way through it. It definitely loses marks for the bizarre mishandling of its plot, but beyond that, the mechanics are solid, and it's successful at everything else it attempts. Approximately 6 hours of play to complete the Main game plus the Bonus Chapter. Rating: Definitely 5 Stars or More!!! I highly recommend this edition of House of 1000 Doors as well as all the other editions too. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first Hidden Object game This was the first hidden object game I played and it had a lot to do with getting me hooked on the genre. I really love this game and still re-play it. The storyline is original and hasn't been repeated in a bunch of other games after it and the plot is very creative. I also liked the bonus game, which I typically ignore. The hidden objects are clever, without being ridiculous and the puzzles are challenging. Though it is an older game now, it still holds its own with cookie cutter hidden object games that are being released now.

I have completed the Bonus Chapter once, and it was fun.The artwork of this game is beautiful, and the music is amazing! The ghost thing is slightly creepy..but I like ghosts! In other words.. Rated 5 out of 5 by from My New Favourite Game This game was such a pleasure to play! The flow of the story was fantastic, the HO scenes were well done and the puzzles were just the right level of challenging. Great graphics, fun bonus content as well. I'll play this one many times over!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This ticks all the boxes It's all that a hidden object game should be. Relaxing, interesting with good HOGs, games with challenge, but don't leave you feeling like an idiot. Vanishing objects to find, good graphics, a strong story that will, no doubt, bring about more of this series. If they are all as good as this one then we will have many hours of enjoyment to look forward to. Wish they were all as good as this

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it....but a couple of things should be in there for a CE I'm on my second time playing this one and do love it. Great graphics, storyline, morphing objects...everything is great. There's just three things I'd prefer to see in a CE game that IS in the other two House Of 1000 Doors games that I have. 1. The map should show if you've collected the morphing objects like the other two do. 2. The windows don't close when you've finished collecting every object in it. I keep looking and clicking to see if there's something else to pick up. I'd prefer if the windows close automatically when there's nothing else to do there. 3. The Strategy Guide doesn't give detailed directions on a puzzle. ex: which arrow to push in sequence, etc. I'd have preferred more direction on a few harder ones...none was there. With those things being said, I still love the game and would recommend it to anyone to play. And....it's a VERY long game, so get comfortable and be ready to play for a long time. I didn't finish the bonus game....will today....I was just tired. :-)
