Dark Romance: A Performance to Die For Collector's Edition is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ghosties? Bah Humbug I wasn't sure I was going to like this game early on, but I began to like it more and more as I played it. I hate Maps that show the game in sections, but overall the Map was helpful. Towards the end of the game you are moving around ALOT, but all that moving keeps you engaged. I don't care that the developer took a page out of the "Phantom of the Opera" and changed it up a bit; many HOG's are reworked from popular literary works; I see no disrespect here. Perhaps you will enjoy it as much as I did. If I have to say anything bad about the game it would be that some of the puzzles were way towards the EASY side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Graphics are Amazing! I finished the entire game plus the bonus game yesterday. What a treat! It has everything I love when I play these games. Graphics: Fantastic! Storyline: Interesting (Even though it has been done before) Puzzles: There were lots of puzzles and most were able to choose your level of difficulty--so they were fun and the right level of difficulty for me when I set it on hard. Fun to play: Yes! I didn't feel that the game bogged down anywhere. It was fun from beginning to end of bonus. Collectables: There were 3 different kinds of things to collect. I found all of them! Length of game: It seemed long. Everytime I thought it was close to the end of the game another area would open up! Overall impression of the game: I had fun playing this game. In fact, when I was playing the bonus chapter, my granddaughter came along and wanted to help play. When we finished the game, she liked it so much she wanted to start her own game from the beginning! I wouldn't mind replaying this one myself sometime. I loved it and hope you do too, but don't take my word for it. Play the free trial yourself. You might have different taste in games than me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can Only Ghosts Top the Prima Donna? Based on the finished game with bonus material. Christine Burns and Raul Delacroix are to wed soon. Christine is the prima donna and is to debue. A mad man grabs her and Raul must avoid traps to get to his beloved. As in all Dark Romance you play both main character and they switch off. So they help each other. It takes place in 1911. There're 13 hops in the main game and 5 in the bonus. The hops are pretty and girly. They offer match 3 instead of hops. I found lots of mini-games that I liked also. I liked using the colored pencils. They had some fool with it mini-games and I wished they had zero wait for skips instead of 15 sec. Used the map a lot, even the small gold arrows. Lots of back and forth. If you want more of a challenge don't use the custom mode. I Loved the Extras. The 48 crystals that I found was used to purchase things to buy Home Decor. Love the Furniture. Collected 15 Theater Props that have info. Collected 15 Opera Posters that I loved the art work. Replay 18 hops, 24 mini-games and 3 movies. The notes are kept in the movies section. Achievements. 10 Wallpapers. My favorite detail was Christine's 5 strand pearl necklace. The Bonus Chapter has Christine helping her daughter Margaret who is following in her foot steps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEWARE! YOU MIGHT HAVE A LEAD ROLE IN THIS GHOSTLY OPERA 6 Chapters, a Bonus Chapter, 55-Page Strategy Guide Dark Romance A Performance to Die For, is the ninth game in the Dark Romance series and If the game seems familiar it is because it is loosely based on the novel by French author Gaston Leroux later to receive acclaim in the musical adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber – The Phantom of the Opera. Because of my love of the musical, I knew that this game would be a must have addition to my gaming library. I am happy to say that as I have played a good portion of the game that I am not disappointed. The game is as good as I thought and did exceed my expectations. As the game begins we see our heroine Christine as she is meeting with her beloved Raul shortly before a performance. Raul has just returned from a business trip abroad and as he promised he has a surprise for Christine. Shortly before Christine is to debut in a new opera, her beloved proposes to her. As he prepares to slip the ring on her finger, Christine is whisked away through a mirror by a strange masked man. Now Raul is left broken-hearted as he must save his beloved and get rid of the madman who kidnapped her. As in previous games in the Dark Romance series the lovers each take part in the game as we switch between characters, in this case Christine and Raul. Each character has their sequence where they move the game forward as they help each other. The game has all of the technical features we enjoy with a custom setting that has a couple of new features. The only issue I have with the custom setting, something I have noted before, is that the lower limit for the hint and skip settings should not be preset but that the gamer should be allowed to choose what the hint and skip limits should be according to how they like to play. Although there are some cute and not so cute critters in the game we do not have an animal helper. The HOPS are nothing that we haven’t seen before but still some are very creative and well-designed. For those of you who might not want to search for items to complete a HOP scene, there is an alternate match-e game available. The puzzles are entertaining but very easy. Even though we are given an option to choose between easy or hard when solving the puzzles, I happened to find even the hard option fairly easy. Although I enjoy puzzles in a HOP game, I don’t always want them to be brain-drain difficult so it was a nice change that I found most of them easily solvable. The game has 24 puzzles and 18 HOP scenes that can be replayed if you purchase the CE version of the game. The CE version of the game includes the following extras: Collectibles to find that include Posters, 15 Theater Props, and Crystals to find and 36 Achievements to earn. Other extras include 10 Wallpapers, 10 Concept Artwork, 5 Music Tracks, Movies, and a Dressing Room that will be furnished by using the crystals you find in the game. The game includes a Bonus Chapter as well as a 55-Page Strategy Guide. Although I have found most of the Dark Romance games to be excellent, this one is my favorite in the series. Perhaps it is because of my infatuation with Phantom but also because of the graphics and the characters in the game. The gameplay was fun and yes I am happy to report that I wasn’t disappointed as we do find the glass knife and a myriad of other recognizable tools that we love to hate. I have said it many times that I am a game addict and I happen to enjoy most games that come along. Recently I have felt a bit disappointed but when I find a game from this developer I know it will have a lot of value in the way of activities, HO scenes and mini-games. There is not much more that I could ask for in a game. Although I love the game, please try the demo to see if it is right for you. Happy gaming!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take 'note' gamers, this is a great game! I have been very fond of Domini Games from day one. They've come a long way and deserve high notes on this game in particular. They are in my top five list to be sure! The long and short of this review is that what I repeatedly look for in a game is intelligent tasks and organization, which can either make or break the game-flow. This game's got it all, in my opinion. I'm half-way through the CE version and am enjoying myself to the max, once again! Because of it's wonderful flow and well thought out tasks, this game may seem easy but it is not. Another great production! Well-done devs! The clever puzzles and mini-games, an all the other trimmings are a big bonus to a fantastic game! So far I haven't seen any editing problems but if I did, I still wouldn't change my rating. This is Phantom of the Opera all over again, but it's a wonderful, mystical take on the storyline. I love the HOP scenes and the clever tasks laid out before us. The sound effects are great, the graphics are stunning, the music is unobtrusive and well-done, the voiceovers are appropriate to each character. Everyone has different tastes--to each his/her own. As for me, I love this game and highly recommend it! Try it out first, if need be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Escape a Phantom's strange dark realm The famous Phantom of the Opera awaits us in this dark romance. Again we will play two roles, that of Christine Burns, a singer on her way to a career and that of Raul Delacroix, her fiancé. The Phantom has been given a face: it is Isaac Cloden. He has created an eerie realm in a shadow world, in which he had his destroyed opera house rebuilt, populated by allies and prisoners. With her excellent voice Christine has aroused his interest. She shall be part of the great performance. He kidnaps her, but Raul can follow through the portal – a mirror. The Phantom’s realm has other laws than the real world. Both have to fight against the magic powers of Isaac and his minions but as well find allies among those, who are imprisoned here. One of the fascinating features of the Dark Romance is playing two characters and solving tasks by sharing them: Raul as well as Christine have to do their part to end up in a solution. The atmosphere is dark and oppressive. Isaac Cloden, is not portrayed as a man, one could pity for his fate as in the literary template of the Phantom of the Opera. Plot unfolds immediately, right after Raul’s ‘question of all questions’ to Christine, the Phantom steps out of the mirror and takes her with him. A fast paced game with many HOS and puzzles. Well placed at least in the demo. In the settings, you can set the difficulty for the puzzles to easy or hard but you can change it within the game for the individual puzzle too. Three kinds of collectibles: posters, theatre props and crystals can be found – the indicator is helpful. Gameplay is smooth, the change of roles offers more challenge and the story took me in right away. Another must-have in this series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SING THE PRAISES OF ANOTHER AWARD-WINNING DOMINI GAME! REVIEW BASED ON THE COMPLETION OF THE MAIN GAME 6 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 55 Pages OVERVIEW: Plan to spend time underground - beneath the streets of Paris playing a game based upon the “Phantom of the Opera.” In this revised version, as Raul proposes marriage to his love, the young ingénue, Christine, a masked stranger, Isaac, appears and drags her through a mirror into his dark, underground lair. The deranged, obsessed Isaac (the victim of a terrible fire to his opera house) has written an opera, the “Ghostly Opera,” an opera so divine that it can only be sung by the voice of a ghost. He now plans to use a ritual to add Christine to his ghostly production believing he will become the greatest opera director! As you wander through the game, get some help from Isaac’s ghostly victims and his long-suffering relatives as well. OPINION: Playing a Domini game is like drinking Parisian champagne! It titillates the senses with its beautiful imagery and creative design. They are in a league of their own! Be prepared! This is a very long game! Again, Domini has provided those extra features which set them apart from other developers. This game, as in all their previous games, is a puzzle-lover’s delight. However, it should also appeal to all hopeless romantics or even opera lovers out there. It is a fast-paced game with plenty of activities to keep the player on their toes. With the puzzle options, I recommend this game for everyone. I love this series and this game is a welcome addition. It is another tag-team event. Play both lovestruck Raul and Christine as they take on crazed Isaac. MECHANICS: There are four levels of play including a customized version. You can choose the level of difficulty, (easy and hard), for the puzzles in the menu. However, you can still change the difficulty level for each puzzle while playing it. There are thirty-six (36) achievements to earn. Collect fifteen (15) opera posters, forty-eight (48) crystals (to purchase items for a dressing room), and fifteen (15) theater props. An indicator on the inventory bar shows if there are any collectibles to be located within the scene. Some of the items are easy to locate and others are more difficult to find. You can also replay eighteen (18) HOP scenes and twenty-four (24) puzzles. There are ten (10) wallpapers along with concept art, music selections and video sequences. BONUS CHAPTER: It is a sequel. Play Christine, who is now the mother of an aspiring prima donna of her own, Margaret Delacroix. A hooded stranger gives your daughter a wrapped box. Upon opening it, she loses her voice – stolen by this stranger. You are off to find the culprit. I have not completed this chapter, waiting until the weekend to do so. It is a long chapter, well-worth the extra price. From what I have played, the quality of the HOP scenes and puzzles are equal to those in the main game. HOP SCENES: You have the option to play a Match-3 game in lieu of the scenes. The game has a diversity of HOP scenes. After the demo, there are several mini-HOP scenes. Most of these require searching for a specific number of one item. Be prepared! There is one scene which has you handling cobras! I found most creatively designed. The standard scenes include lists of items, silhouette, storybook, and matching. My favorite is a search and replace scene, locating items and then placing items back into their proper location. This scene also includes some mini-puzzles. There are NO repeated HOP scenes. PUZZLES: I LOVE the puzzles in this game. The main game contains thirty-seven (37) and the bonus chapter has many as well, which are NOT included in this total. I will need to replay some of these as I found some of the puzzles somewhat difficult and time-consuming. There is a wide-variety, and, unlike other developers, there are no repetitions of the puzzles within this game. Here are few of my favorites after the demo: SPOILERS: LIST OF SOME PUZZLES AFTER THE DEMO: A. Pipe puzzle. Move a ball through segments of pipe from the upper left to the bottom right of the grid. Create a path through the pipes using a gold pipe to connect the pipes. Then push a “start” button to see if you are successful. B. Mahjong puzzle. Match up stacked tiles. After a match, new tiles will be uncovered. C. Connection puzzle. Connect snakes with eyes of differing colors with a gem of the same color without crossing paths. All spaces must be used in connecting the snakes. D. Switch puzzle. Switch wigs, bows, crowns, necklaces, earrings and masks on mannequins according to a given guide. (LOVE this puzzle – so much fun) E. Mathematical puzzle. Open a safe by entering the given code using a dial upon the safe. The dial is only allowed to go either 3 spaces to the right or 4 spaces to the left. F. Physics puzzle. Place angled tokens into place to direct a beam of light from the top to the bottom of a grid. G. Rotating tiles puzzle. Rotate fourteen (14) wheels so that on each wheel the arrow points up. Moving one wheel affects the others. H. Rotating rings puzzle. Rotate a series of triangles on a grid so the sides of each one matches up with the side of the triangle next to it. (Lengthy and somewhat difficult) I. Switch puzzle. Switch slats to restore a picture.
