Hidden Expedition: The Golden Secret Collector's Edition is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hidden Expedition's gold No Sam?? Have to say I miss him too. Other wise it is a good game. Seems like many of the newer games in any titles are getting shorter or maybe I'm getting a lot better. So far Hidden Expedition's are my favorite games . Hope to see more with Sam but maybe the voice actor is not interested in doing any.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HIDDEN EXPEDITION 14 MAY SPARK NEW INTEREST FOR FANS OF THE SERIES! I completed this outstanding adventure and I am proud to once again be a recruit of Hidden Expedition League of Preservation (H.E.L.P) where as before I wasn't so thrilled because I haven't enjoyed this series since Hidden Expedition Dawn of Prosperity (Editors Choice). Eipix has raised the bar for "The Golden Secret" which may satisfy the expectations for some fans of the series. Since this is the 16th edition to the series some may be burned out while others may find that this edition will once again spark enthusiasm for the series; you just never know until reviewers give a rating after completing the entire game beyond the demo. This is one of the best Hidden Expedition editions offered in the series to date and it is a heart-pounding chapter in this beloved series. H.E.L.P. HQ interrupts your ski vacation with an important request: travel to Geneva to purchase an ancient artifact called the "Golden Wheel" that could very well hold the secrets to H.E.L.P.'s long history. But it won't be easy. You'll have to be the winning bidder in a high-stakes auction. Fortunately, H.E.L.P. is footing the bill as you travel to incredible destinations in Switzerland, Germany, and El Dorado South America. The storyline is fantastic, full of surprises and well written by the developers. So many questions from previous editions are answered in this game. The only question left...Can you unlock the secrets of the mysterious Golden Wheel, or will H.E.L.P.'s origins be lost to time forever? You must play "The Golden Wheel" in order to reveal the unknown. I literally could not stop playing until the conclusion of this thrilling and engaging mission. This edition has a runtime at approximately 4 or 5 hours, with another hour for the bonus adventure. The CE bling is typically the same as in most CE games with some variation, so to include that in this review would be reductive. I do hope this edition will generate a renewed interest in this ongoing saga and that casual gamers who love adventures will enjoy playing this installment as much as I did. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HOP ON FOR AN ENTERTAINING RIDE ACROSS THE GLOBE TO FIND THE GOLDEN SECRET In another Hidden Expedition game you are back as an agent of the HELP organization. Your holiday in Switzerland has been interrupted as you have been called upon by the agency to find a very special long-lost artifact that will point to the very origins of HELP. Start your journey at a Geneva auction house as you win the artifact only to have it wrenched from your hands. Now you are off on a globetrotting adventure as you seek to recover the treasure. After the disastrous EIPIX game earlier this week I had my doubts about even trying the demo for The Golden Secret but in the end it seems like all is not lost and this developer still has what it takes to present an excellent game. This is one of the most exciting HE games to be released in recent years and it is so much better than the last one, even though I did enjoy HE The Curse of Mithridates and can recommend that game as well. Although the HOPS and Puzzles are typical EIPIX I felt they were much better than those in some recent games. I happen to enjoy most of the HOPS from this developer even those where we must find items in the storybook type scenes. Some of the puzzles seemed to be a notch up from the last game and some even have a higher level of challenge. If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes 14 HOPS, 17 Puzzles, 36 Fact Cards to find, as well as Morphing Objects, and Achievements to earn. The other extras include 9 Character Art, 8 Pictures or Wallpapers, 9 Videos, Music, a Souvenir Room, Bonus Chapter, and the Strategy Guide. In the end this game is so much fun and as I noted earlier one of the best HE games in recent years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game after the seemingly slow start at the auction house. Fortunately, the game picks up speed and my interest level rose with the action. It is good to see that EIPIX still has what it takes to create an interesting and enjoyable game. I purchased the game halfway through the demo and I am so happy to add the Golden Secret to my collection. There has only been one other game since the year began that I found really worthwhile and hopefully the trend will continue with CE games bringing a bit more to the table. Even though I find this a fun and entertaining game, please try the demo to see if this is one you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EIPIX HAS UNCOVERED A GOLDEN SECRET “HISTORICITY” WITH THIS GAME! REVIEW BASED ON THE ENTIRE GAME - Time: 4 ½ hours 5 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 39 Pages OVERVIEW: H.E.L.P. returns in another action-packed game! Agent - How much do you know about the origin of H.E.L.P.? In this game, many of the agency’s secrets will be revealed! Get prepared for a fast and furious adventure beginning in Geneva, Switzerland. From there, enjoy a danger-filled trip taking you to a castle in Germany; then travel to the creepy dark hidden chambers within a London cemetery; finally find yourself in the jungles of South America! This time, you are off to thwart a rogue agent who has stolen a diary along with its key, a South American artifact called the Golden Wheel. He and his evil cohort are using the diary to unlock an important agency secret. In this game you will learn the history of this organization and hopefully thwart the rogue agent and his fellow evildoer from their nefarious plans. And remember this paradox - “some things need to be destroyed to be preserved.” With the rash of less-than-spectacular games lately from this developer, I was not going to purchase this game, but I am happy I did. This is one you DO NOT WANT TO MISS! MECHANICS: What a fantastic, turnaround game with an engaging, well-written gaming script. Unlike many of this developer’s games, this game is BETTER AFTER THE DEMO! The graphics are incredibly beautiful, especially the jungle scenes. The story behind the game is well-written and I was surprised by the direction the story took within this game. I cannot imagine any player becoming bored playing this game! The pace is excellent with plenty of action-filled scenes and a plethora of activities to keep the player engaged. This game should appeal to adventure game lovers! Beginning players should enjoy this game as well. The story is easy to follow and the HOP scenes after the demo are very creative. However, those intermediate and expert gamers will love the challenging aspect to this game. A couple of the puzzles are truly difficult. I skipped two of the puzzles and will replay them after I finish the bonus chapter. EXTRAS: You collect thirty-six (36) fact cards (as in all the games in this series) and twelve morphing objects (some are not part of the HOP scenes). Both are easy to locate. There are thirteen (13) achievements. You can also replay fourteen (14) HOP scenes and seventeen (17) puzzles. The collectibles in the bonus chapter are twenty-five (25) souvenir items. Hopefully, EIPIX will continue to listen to the creative muse they have resurrected. Kudos, EIPIX! This little “sleeper” kept me alert! BONUS CHAPTER: The bonus chapter is a sequel. It continues where the main game ends. I have not completely played the bonus chapter. Return to the jungles of Colombia to locate and capture an evildoer and bring him back to justice. HOP SCENES: There are fourteen (14) HOP scenes within in the main game. The HOP scenes are better after the demo. They include the usual lists of items, silhouette scenes and storybook scenes. There are also a couple of rebus puzzle scenes as well. They are thematic and each one fits well into the geographic location in which they are placed. There are quite a few storybook scenes to further the story of the agency. However, within the storybook scenes, the player will search for more than one item for items listed in BOLD letters. One of the scenes has the Cycle of the Moon mini-puzzle. There is one scene set in the Colombian jungle which is very creative. It requires searching for silhouette items on four scrolls. It is incredibly beautiful and one of the best HOP scenes I have seen this year! PUZZLES: There are eighteen (18) puzzles in the main game. The puzzles are creatively-designed. They vary in difficulty and there are a couple which are very difficult. The puzzles are also thematic, relating to the scene in which they appear. SPOILERS: Here is a sampling of puzzles appearing AFTER THE DEMO: A. Let’s get together! Assembly puzzle. A unique puzzle in which you must assemble five (5) pieces into one item by moving them on a path and then using wheels to rotate them. Bring them together so they “snap” together. At times, you will need to move and rotate pieces on individual paths before you can move other pieces. A little toughie! Rating: 3 B. Come fly with me! Physical puzzle. Following the “hand(s)” at the side of the screen, climb up a ladder to a helicopter avoiding frayed areas on the rope. Rating: 1 C. Where is my secret decoder ring? Matching/Code puzzle: Match up symbols on the Golden Wheel with written letters within the diary to provide a super-secret message. Rating: 3 D. Where art thou quill and ink? Maze puzzle. Using ye quill and ink – draw a path through a maze to lead to an inner chamber. Choose between three entrances to chart your course. If thy pen touches the lines of the maze, thou must begin again! Rating: 2 E. Where is Tarzan when you need him? Maze - Escape puzzle! Choose arrows to lead a cart through the jungle. As you traverse the jungle, you must choose the path to follow by choosing between two arrows. Not choosing the proper arrow fast enough causes you to die! Keep on clicking! Rating: 2 F. Hands off! Those don’t belong to you! Matching puzzle. Match up items (axes, headdresses, and skirts) belonging to four statues so that each statue has the proper items which belong with it. Move between scenes to place the items into their proper location. Rating: 2 Unique and well-done. G. Keep your arms to yourself! Connection puzzle. Move arms extending from a main token to attach to other jeweled tokens. Then attach the jeweled tokens to other tokens to set off an earth-shaking event. Truly difficult. Rating: 3

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Fun One of my favorite series is making a comeback after some weak entries. Yes, as others have noticed, no Sam, who was a favorite of mine as well. Fortunately his picture on the memorial wall had no date of death entry. What we have instead ranks as possibly the most useless H.E.L.P. helper in quite a while, serving principally to have a gun put to her head every so often just to keep the plot going. I'll swap her out for Sam any day. I had the good fortune to beta this one and the finished version didn't disappoint except perhaps in length. Loved the auction, the castle environs - more of that, please, and was a little disappointed to wind up in yet another South American jungle, but as we were after El Dorado (in Colombia?) I suppose it didn't matter. Pros: Crisp art, clever puzzles, excellent voice acting. HOs were a nice mix but nothing terribly new. Cons: Certain of the solutions were a little strained - a club to "untie" a skull? Really? and because of that suffered when the player tried random objects from the inventory and found the hot zones a little too small. One or the other is going to have to give. There is little more infuriating when the very useful Hint button gives you the same solution you've just tried unsuccessfully. Overall, an excellent entry, something of a comeback for the series. With a little more length, a little more castle, and maybe a little more Sam this one would get five stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thank You, Eipix!! At last, a game worth playing!! As several others have done a great job reviewing all the details, I will just simply say this is the best game that has come out in awhile! Where there isn't anything necessarily "new" about any of it (I have only played the demo, so far), it does have the "fun factor" I have found lacking in most games these past 18, or so, months. I am pleased to say this will be a purchase, for me! As always, try the demo for yourself!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from this HE is a cut above the past few installments I was a beta tester for this game and it was quite a few months ago so I do not recall much of what occurred in that test. I can only surmise that Eipix either did some improvements with the Golden Secret or just waited all this time for the general release because Eipix has so many irons in the fire. The story is typical of all HE episodes with the detective being tasked to find an artifact or to contact someone. In this case the golden wheel is key to what will happen. The detective buys it at auction only to have it stolen when the detective is mugged. The villain of the piece is named Hillebrant and why he wants the wheel is not very obvious during the demo. I liked this part of the story since it makes me want to continue. I also enjoyed that ( unlike most HE tales ) that there is not a supposed "helper " who turns out to be one of the bad guys, at least not in the demo. As is always the case this HE is well drawn and I always enjoy finding the fact cards that enhance the background info relevant to the story. The HO segments and puzzles are typical HOPA fare and there are compasses to collect. Golden Secret in an improvement over some of the more recent installments in the series yet HE in general could use an overhaul because all of them are basically the same. Since the earlier HEs are still better than this one I will not endorse the CE although I will recommend the game for purposes of the review process. Players unfamiliar with the series are better served by going back to the initial 3 or 4 in the series. Personally I can find myself waiting for the SE or using a free game code should I find that one is due to expire ( still cannot fathom why BFG has a 2 month time limit on game codes ) Of late I still end up saving $$$ and replaying excellent games in my repertoire.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Espionage and intrigue... Hello friends! As usually, I review mostly on the game play and leave the story to others who can do a much better job on that than I. I can't believe this is #14 in this series. The graphics are excellent, very realistic, right down to the muscles in a hand and hair on your face. As usual, we do have a slight blur when going in and out of closeups and cut scenes. This seems to be the norm with most games anymore. Colors are very nice, but a bit faded when traveling to another area. Animation is also very realistic, with nice mouth, eye and even eyebrow movement when speaking. I like how they breathe "normally" and not have their chest constantly rising and falling. Game play was quite good, with no problems during the demo and the scenes fit my large screen completely. The voice are well done and are age and character appropriate. The characters speak with emotion, and not just someone reading a script. You can click through dialog if you read faster than they speak, and not miss any clues or necessary information. Music was nice and moved with whatever was happening at the time, adding a little suspense now and then. Sound FX are well done and are throughout the game. HOPs are a combination of find the highlighted word; interactive lists and straight lists. The scenes are quite clear and items are not difficult to find. There was not an overabundance of HOPs, but what we had was well placed within the game play. I did not see that you could switch to something else. Puzzles very well done, even though most were not difficult to complete. Some did take time and thought, so we did have a little challenge. Hint system is very helpful and we have the transport feature for longer jumps to locations. This comes in quite handy, as you are constantly on the move from one place to another. We have a jump map, which I did not care for at all...a blank that you need to run your cursor over to figure out which room is which. Collectibles were not bad. We have to find 12 morphing items in HOPs, which are easy to miss. I didn't run across any outside of the HOPs, but I could have easily missed them. There are 36 hidden signs that look like a gold compass or pocket watch. I didn't find any of these difficult to find. We also have the usual fact cards tossed about, that give us information on areas and things within the game. I really like this series. This addition give your action, adventure, travel, intrigue and a good story line that is easy to follow and flow very well. It also give us a little challenge now and then. I was drawn into this one from the beginning and disappointed when the demo ended. I think all levels of players will find this one interesting and fun and yes, I am going to add it to my collection. I do not give 5 stars easily, a game has to be exceptional throughout to get them. As much as I like this game, it fell a bit short. Still, I gave it a 4.75. As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from THE LEGACY MUST BE PRESERVED, THE SECRET MUST REMAIN HIDDEN! Your mission Agent, should you choose to except it, involves buying an artifact at the Geneva Auction House. The artifact, known as the Golden Wheel, contains vital information pertaining to when H.E.L.P was founded. This should be an open and shut case, and you should be able to return to return to the slopes, and enjoy the remainder of your vacation, quickly......yeah, right! Since The Golden Secret is on the topic of H.E.L.P's origins I thought I'd add a little of my own research that I included on one of my earlier HE reviews. I researched some fun facts, because I wanted to find out what H.E.L.P stood for, the P was stumping me. It turns out that this league has had a few name changes over the years, that I didn't even realize! In Hidden Expedition: Titanic, the league went by the name of H.E.A.L, which was the Hidden Expedition Adventure League. In Hidden Expedition: Everest, the league was simply the Hidden Expedition Club, and in Hidden Expedition: Devil's Triangle, it was referred to as H.E.A.T which stood for Hidden Expedition Adventure Team. The newer games have transitioned into the name H.E.L.P which stands for Hidden Expedition League of Preservation. Pretty cool useless information right? I'll admit, when I saw today's Hidden Expedition game, I got kind of bummed out. Let's face it, the games in this series, lately have been less than stellar. I was pleasantly surprised! This game actually has a very interesting plot, but there are still some major epic fails as far as logic goes. The features are everything I expected, but it's because Eipix never "thinks outside the box" is it because of laziness, or because they are on the top of the HOPA pile and they don't think they need to? I would really love to see the famous H.E.L.P box upgraded to reflect technology of the first century of the 3rd millennium, the century of the Anno Domini era, better know as the 21st century! It's the equivalence of carrying around a large boom box instead of a cell phone or mp3 device! The "artifact" in question has more technology than my help box, and to make matters worse, the surveillance video was recorded on a VHS tape! (are those still available?) SPOILER ALERT: Funny Logic Fails (or things that just don't make sense) *why did I help myself to the receptionist's printer ink cartridge? Those are expensive, couldn't I ask first? *after the robbery, my partner says "I'll make sure the police don't get involved" really? *Sam has set me up with a rental car, when I open the trunk, I discover not only a whole slew of miscellaneous items, including, old shoes, baseballs, and leftover chinese? *the rent-a-cop asks me to stop the bleeding (don't worry there's no blood) before he can access the before mentioned VHS tape, yet the second I bandage him (which btw, that loose safety pinned cloth does wonders) he immediately hands me the tape? *Thank goodness the perp took off his mask and looked straight into the camera? *why does H.E.L.P have so many employees going rogue, don't they do backgrounds checks, they are a spy organization after all? * why do I try to disguise my appearance, then pick up a large fish net to carry, won't that draw unwanted attention? END SPOILER ALERT The Hidden Object Scenes are varied, and they have done a nice job of incorporating the HOP's relevant to the story, such as while searching for files in a filing cabinet. There are List finds, Keywords in Sentence finds, Multiple finds, and the typical HE, find items that fit the descriptions of two pictures added together as combo items, such as a quill & ink equals a pen. There are also a few zoom zone HOP's where you are tasked with finding a handful of items within a small zoomed in window. Most of the main HOP's have a Morphing Object, that is indicated with an icon on the right of the inventory bar. The Mini Games are not bad, and range from easy to medium difficulty, without too much frustration. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo: 1) Select 3 different numbers whose sum equals the number the auctioneer calls out. This is required a total of 4 times. 2) Drag the signs (<,>, =) to the correct boxes to compare facial features between 2 photographs. 3) Drag all directional fragments to form a path for the claw to take. 4) Rearrange the tiles to form multiple patterns on a 3 tiered corner puzzle.
