Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward Collector's Edition is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from ONE OF THE BEST HAUNTED HOTELS! Retro review June 2021 Of course, it's really hard to find a bad Haunted Hotel, but if you are a Lovecraft fan, oh my, will you have a good time. You'll find a chronological list of all 20 games in the series at the bottom of this review Charles Dexter Ward is the 4th in the series and the first from Elephant Games who took over from the original devs. While the original studio was heavy into HO, Elephant Games is heavy into the adventure of the thing. Man oh man, so glad they obtained the franchise. I've played all the Haunted Hotels, all 20 of them over the years, and as I was making a chronological list for my review of the 20th, A Past Redeemed, I realized that it was time to start over from the beginning. Playing the journey from the first developers through the franchise transfer to Elephant Games to what Elephant did with it from episode to episode is amazing. SO glad I started over. Here's your list: 1. Haunted Hotel << SE only 2. Haunted Hotel II: Believe the Lies << SE only 3. Haunted Hotel: Lonely Dream << SE only 4. Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward << CE's start here, game taken over by Elephant Games 6/2012 release 5. Haunted Hotel: Eclipse 6. Haunted Hotel: Ancient Bane 7. Haunted Hotel: Death Sentence 8. Haunted Hotel: Eternity 9. Haunted Hotel: Phoenix 10. Haunted Hotel: The X 11. Haunted Hotel: The Axiom Butcher 12. Haunted Hotel: Silent Waters 13. Haunted Hotel: The Thirteenth 14. Haunted Hotel: Personal Nightmare 15. Haunted Hotel XV: The Evil Inside 16. Haunted Hotel: Lost Dreams 17. Haunted Hotel: Beyond the Page 18. Haunted Hotel: Room 18 19. Haunted Hotel: Lost Time 20. Haunted Hotel: A Past Redeemed (The last one in the series, at least for now).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Worthy Lovecraft Game Captures eerie atmosphere of Lovecraft perfectly, not just tentacles and cosmic Cthulhu horror (although you get some of that too). The grainy footage that makes up the cut-scenes could have been lifted from a movie. The HO scenes make sense -- you're not just sifting through a random pile of junk, you're in a place where you expect to find a certain object and you'll find it, after you go through the drawer/ work bench/ etc. I still replay this from time to time, and it never fails to entertain or creep me out. The atmospheric sounds are particularly good -- a sudden creak of the hotel settling, a sound of something falling over or a door slamming in dead quiet, and suddenly they need to peel you off the ceiling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PREQUEL The hanging ending of this game, including the bonus chapter, set up anticipation for the next game in the series. Although I think you could play the SE of this game and still be intrigued about the sequel, the bonus chapter really seemed essential to understand the storyline. There were 33 achievements, including the bonus chapter. I missed 6, mostly having to do with not using any hints or skips throughout the game. This is hard for someone as impatient as me to accomplish. At some point, it just isn't worth my time to continue trying and I really don't like to cheat and go to the built-in strategy guide to get the solutions. This game could really have used a map, even though there weren't a lot of different locations. There was still a lot of back and forth that weren't real obvious from the inventory items or other clues. The hint button worked excellently in this respect, telling where to go and what to do when you get there. The HOS were average; not too easy but also not too hard. I think the game, particularly the bonus chapter which was pretty much all puzzles, could have used a few more. I'm heading out to buy the next game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love this game! I have been a casual game addict for a few years and this is one of the first games I played. When the internet went out last night during a storm, I decided to bring up some old games and was excited when I found this one. It was on my mental check list for my favorite games. I was hoping I would still find it as captivating as the first time, and I was pleasantly surprised that I loved it as much before. The puzzles are old-school – which means you have to work on them. The guide is so handy that I got all achievements this time around. The HOS are straight forward and the guide offers snapshots. I am a fan of creepiness, and this game’s story line for me was eerie and suspenseful. From the somber atmosphere to the toned down yet beautiful artwork, I became absorbed into the game; so much so I forgot the ending! What a surprise again (maybe I should catch up on my Lovecraft reading). While I appreciate beautifully crafted games and technological advancement, it is nice to sit back and play a game that values your intelligence. Those who are fans of the old-school graphics will love this game. The bonus game was very puzzle heavy, but I enjoyed the challenge. All in all a wonderful day to spend on Haunted Hotel!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Most Phenomenal Game I've Played in Years Rarely do I ever believe that CE's are worth the money-but in this case, yes! I may be a bit biased as I am an H.P. Lovecraft fan and have read all of his writings, but that also gives me a unique perspective about the game itself. The developers did a fantastic job with the story of Charles Dexter Ward. If I were to base my review on the storyline alone, it would be 5 stars. The way in which the story is told is masterfully done. The journal entries that you locate along the way really help tell the story as do the well-placed cut-scenes along the way. Along with the 'diary entries', you will also come across letters, books, and correspondence which also contribute to the story. I found myself immediately taken in, and it was difficult to stop playing. This is a VERY long game so you get your money's worth. I consider myself an expert player and it took me about 8-9 hours to play, NOT including bonus content. Granted, I took my time exploring and read ALL of the journal entries, etc., but even taking that into account, the fastest of players will get several hours worth of game-play. As for the game play itself, it is heavy on the Adventure and lite on the HOS, which I prefer. There are only a few hidden object scenes scattered throughout the game, perhaps 6-8 total (rough estimate). There are some puzzles to solve-none overly difficult and with time and patience, can easily be completed without the need for a walk-through. Most of the game consists of exploring numerous locations and picking up and utilizing various inventory objects along the way. The atmosphere is spooky. This game was designed with a more mature audience in mind, so be sure to take note of that before handing off to your kiddies. The subject matter deals with some pretty dark and sinister topics, but then, it wouldn't be H.P. Lovecraft if it didn't. The graphics are very well done and capture the mood of the story very well as does the environment sounds and the accompanying musical score, which is not constant, unobtrusive, and quite beautifully rendered. From every way I look at it, I cannot think of a single complaint about this game, which honestly NEVER happens. There is usually always something that bothers me, but not with this game. The time and effort put into developing this game is evident in all possible areas and I can only hope that other developers take note, and are up to the challenge of creating games as perfect and enjoyable as this one. Happy gaming!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spooky Game With A Lovecraft Theme! First off, I must admit that I used the Strategy Guide more often in this game than any other I have played. But that said, both the game play and the story were well worth it. I thought the graphics were excellent, and the music is just right for this sort of story. It's there in the background, setting a gloomy mood without being intrusive in any way. And kudos to the foley person. The sound effects were excellently done and very realistic. The HOS were quite easy, though I did have to use the hint button once or twice. The mini-games were fun to play as they were really based on logic. Not the kind that make you want to pull your hair out ;) The story was interesting and fun, collecting and combining different objects to produce a desired result (developing a film, for instance). The layout of the scenes was a bit confusing at first, but I finally remembered what room was where, and how to get to it. But if it were easy, there would be no challenge. Finally-if you are a Lovecraft fan, you will truly enjoy this game as you will pick up on the various references to his stories. The writer did an excellent job and is quite obviously a fan of H.P. It is not necessary to be familiar with this great author's works, though, to enjoy the game. This is the first game that actually game me shivers when the ending played. It was an OMG moment. I won't say more as I don't want to spoil it for others. The "extras" aren't that abundant and mostly consist of more mini-games. I haven't played those yet as I need a break but if they are anything like those within the main story they should be fun as well. So much fun I played it twice! And my hubby, who just started to play as a lark, was soon hooked in and now can't wait to continue. He's just finished Day 1 and is frantically trying to find the time to continue on. I recommend the CE version not for the extras but because the Strategy Guide might become indispensable to some (like me). It would get me out of a bind so that I could continue instead of spinning my wheels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't help buying this game I think this game is pretty cool. It has everything I love and everything I need in game: very good graphics, a lot of puzzles, mini-games, fine music and interesting story and bonus chapter (as CE). The game has nice variety of locations - swamps, hotel, basements, caves, crypt etc. So I wasn't bored playing because of changing environment. Also I really liked weather effects (weather is changing through the game). I think it's worth to be played.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Wonderful Game! This game hit all the right notes for me. The story, based on HP Lovecraft, was dark and interesting. The HO scenes were clear and simple - no gadgetry to distract from gameflow. The minigames were numerous, mostly logic-based, and varied in difficulty, always advancing you to a new area to explore. The game world felt large, and was beautifully rendered. If you liked "Dorian Gray" (released awhile back), you'll like this. Extras were also worthwhile. More like this one, please!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than the First This game is much better than the first of the series. The graphics are excellent. I think this is a good combination for both those who like strictly HOG games and those who prefer more adventure and puzzle type games. The puzzles are decent and not terribly hard. The HOG scenes are easy to navigate since the graphics are very clear. Takes place in New Orleans, which seems to be an excellent location for anything related to haunted houses. One of the better games which BF has introduced lately. Kudos to the developer!
